Make sure you’re on the best rate plan for your electricity use!

KU Electric offers several rate plans. By default, customers are placed on the standard rate plan that bills you one basic rate for your electricity usage. If you can avoid using electricity during peak or high-demand hours, you may be able to save money on a Time of Day rate plan!

There are two Time of Day rate plans available from Kentucky Utilities: the Energy Rate and the Demand Rate.

If you use the Energy Rate Plan, you’ll pay 20% less for your electricity during off-peak hours. When you use electricity during evenings, nights and weekends instead of daytime hours, you can save a bundle! If you have a programmable thermostat, timers on your appliances and/or the ability to manage when your appliances are running, the Energy Rate plan may work for you.

The Demand Rate is even more complicated. When you’re on the Demand plan, you’ll also need to ensure that you’re spreading out your energy usage. Using too much energy at once will cost you extra, so KU Electric recommends that Demand customers never cook, wash dishes and laundry at the same time. You’ll want to do one task at a time to avoid that costly demand penalty charge.

KU Electric customers frequently see peaks in their bills during the cold winters and the hot, humid summers. Fortunately, KU Electric has budget billing options and other payment plans that can help you manage your power bill better!

First of all, electric bills can be complicated to read. KU Electric offers a helpful how-to guide when it comes to interpreting all the graphs, charts and costs listed on your power bill.

Budget payment plans average your annual usage into twelve equal payments. To avoid huge settlement amounts, the power company reviews the account and may adjust the payment amount during the 4th and 8th month of your plan. To have the best experience and lowest settlement amounts, Kentucky Utilities recommends that you enroll during May, June, September or October.
