If you’re wondering how to get hotel vouchers for homeless people, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve scoured countless resource directories to put all the information you need into one easy-to-use resource.
Motel or hotel vouchers are essentially coupons that are issued by certain charities and churches. These can be redeemed at the designated motel or hotel for a free night’s stay. Some organizations can provide a free hotel voucher for one night, while others provide them for a week or even longer. It just depends on your circumstances and what organizations are offering in your area.
In this article, we will review all of the nationwide and local organizations that we’ve found that provide this service. We are constantly updating this article as we find new sources, so save this link and check back often for updates!
Hotel Vouchers for Homeless People Nationwide
There are very few nationwide organizations that offer hotel vouchers for homeless people. Even though we have been able to confirm some local branches of these organizations offer this service, it is possible that it is not available in all areas. You will need to contact your local chapter or branch for details.
American Red Cross
The American Red Cross may offer up to three days of motel vouchers, clothing and other needs in time of disasters. It is not clear if this service is available at other times.
Catholic Charities organizations often offer housing support services. These may include rent assistance, eviction prevention, transitional housing or even hotel vouchers for homeless people in certain cases.
If you are experiencing homelessness, it’s always a good idea to connect with the Catholic Charities office in your area so that they can help you.
Sometimes, your local homeless shelter may be able to provide free hotel vouchers or tell you where you can go to get one. At they very least, they may know where you will be able to stay.
That’s because not everyone is able to stay in a shelter. Sometimes, the shelter may be exclusively for certain groups of people (like domestic violence victims or sober adults). Sometimes, homeless shelters may issue hotel vouchers for homeless people during periods of extreme heat or extreme cold, when it is especially unsafe to stay on the streets.
The Salvation Army has been helping homeless people for decades. They operate a network of shelters across the country. In areas where a shelter is not available, you may be able to receive a free hotel voucher from your local Salvation Army.
St. Vincent de Paul
Some St. Vincent de Paul chapters provide short-term hotel vouchers for homeless people in crisis. This service is often run through their eviction prevention or housing stabilization programs.
For example, SVDP Tacoma says that they can “assist with basic needs, such as gas cards, short-term motel vouchers, grocery vouchers… and more.”
However, there is no guarantee that every SVDP location will offer this service as the decision is often made locally.
Supportive Services for Veteran Families
The SSVF program was designed to help veterans secure safe and stable housing as soon as possible. The goal of this organization is to provide long-term housing, but they sometimes offer motel or hotel vouchers for homeless veterans when it is necessary to ensure their safety.
If you are looking for homeless vouchers in your area, you can call your local 211 service for assistance. In New York City, the number is actually 311 instead. This connects you with the staff of your local resource directory who should be able to help you find assistance.
That being said, we comb through a lot of resources in the course of our research here at Low Income Relief. While we’re digging into articles, we always pop back over here to add any resources that offer homeless vouchers for homeless people in different states. FAQs about Hotel Vouchers
We get a lot of questions about hotel vouchers, so we wanted to expand this article with a quick FAQ section.
What are hotel vouchers?
A voucher is a coupon that can be redeemed for a certain good or service at another location. We’ve talked a lot about food vouchers, furniture vouchers, clothing vouchers and other types of vouchers that benefit low income people across America.
Hotel vouchers are similar. They can be redeemed for a free night’s stay at a certain hotel that has agreed to partner with the agency that gave you the voucher. These vouchers can be used to help you sleep in a place that is safe, clean, and private.
How do I get a hotel voucher?
You will need to contact an agency on this list in order to get your hotel voucher. It’s important to understand that even if you contact them, you may not be able to get one.
Although there are many nationwide and local organizations that offer hotel vouchers for homeless people, supplies are limited. There are more homeless people than vouchers that can assist them. It’s often difficult to find an organization that is offering this service, so be persistent!
How long will a hotel voucher last?
Hotel vouchers are often only valid for a single night, although some organizations may cover a week or even a month’s worth at a time. It just depends on where you live and what services are available in your area.
Are hotel vouchers always available?
Hotel vouchers are in high demand and are often very difficult to find. However, they are more likely to be available seasonally. For example, some charities will issue hotel vouchers when all of the homeless shelters in the area are full during extreme cold or extreme heat.
There are many national and local organizations that offer hotel vouchers for homeless people across the country. If you are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness, the agencies in this area may be able to assist you. You can also call 211, reach out to your local Community Action Council, or look for Rapid Rehousing or Housing Instability Support Programs in your area for more assistance.
