What Fast Food Places Take EBT in 2024?

Wondering what fast food places take EBT? If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to grab a bite to eat with your SNAP food benefits, you’re in luck! We’ve found thousands of fast food establishments that take EBT around the country.

In this article, we’ll uncover the fast food chains that welcome EBT users and equip you with the knowledge to make informed choices when it comes to satisfying your cravings without breaking the bank.

Understanding EBT

Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) is the way that the government distributes benefits from several programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

To qualify for EBT, individuals must meet certain income and financial criteria established by their respective state’s Department of Human Services or equivalent agencies. Eligibility typically considers factors such as household size, income level, and expenses.

SNAP Benefits

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, is a vital federal assistance program designed to alleviate food insecurity for low-income individuals and families. SNAP benefits are distributed in the form of electronic funds on an EBT card, making it convenient for recipients to purchase groceries and, in some cases, even buy hot meals from fast food places that take EBT.

While SNAP benefits are typically intended for grocery store purchases, there are select fast food establishments that participate in programs allowing EBT cardholders to use their benefits for restaurant meals. This is usually done through something called the Restaurant Meals Program, although some fast food places like Papa Murphy’s will allow anyone to buy meals with their SNAP benefits.

TANF Benefits

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is a federal assistance program in the United States that provides financial support to low-income families with children. TANF aims to help families achieve self-sufficiency by offering cash assistance, job training, and other support services. Each state administers its own TANF program, tailoring it to the specific needs of its residents while adhering to federal guidelines.

Because TANF is a cash benefit, it can be spent freely at fast food places that take EBT. You do not have to meet Restaurant Meals Program guidelines to use your EBT cash benefits at fast food establishments as long as they can process the transaction from your card. Just make sure to specify that you’re using EBT cash.

How to Use EBT at Fast Food Places

Swiping your card at fast food places that take EBT is a straightforward process. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make the most of this convenient option:

  1. Locate a Participating Restaurant: First, identify fast food places that take EBT in your area. We have a list of addresses in our Restaurant Meals Program guides, which are linked in the state list above.
  2. Check EBT Acceptance: Before you head to the restaurant, ensure that they accept EBT payments. Most fast food places that take EBT will display a “We Accept EBT” sign near the entrance or at the cashier’s counter.
  3. Place Your Order: Once you’ve confirmed that the restaurant accepts EBT, approach the counter or drive-thru to place your order. You can choose from the menu items eligible for purchase with your EBT card.
  4. Swipe Your EBT Card: When it’s time to pay, present your EBT card to the cashier or at the payment window if you’re at the drive-thru. The cashier will swipe your card and ask you to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) to complete the transaction.
  5. Verify Your Purchase: Ensure that the items you’ve selected are eligible for EBT payment. Typically, hot, prepared foods are eligible, while non-food items or items like alcohol and tobacco are not.
  6. Receive Your Food: After completing the transaction, you’ll receive your food, just like any other customer.

It’s important to note that EBT benefits can only be used for eligible food items and not for taxes, tips, or any non-food items. Additionally, the availability of specific menu items may vary from one participating restaurant to another. Always double-check with the cashier if you have any questions about what you can purchase with your EBT card. Fast food places that take EBT offer convenience and accessibility, ensuring that individuals and families with SNAP benefits can enjoy a hot and affordable meal when needed.

Rules & Restrictions

While the Restaurant Meals Program provides valuable access to fast food options for SNAP recipients, there are some important rules and restrictions to keep in mind:

  1. Eligible SNAP Recipients: The program is primarily designed for individuals who are elderly, disabled, or homeless and unable to cook meals at home. Eligibility criteria may vary by state, so it’s essential to check with your local SNAP office to confirm your eligibility.
  2. Specific Menu Items: EBT benefits can only be used to purchase specific menu items that are eligible under the program. These typically include hot and prepared foods, such as burgers, sandwiches, and certain side dishes. Non-eligible items, like alcoholic beverages or store merchandise, are not eligible for EBT payment.
  3. No Taxes or Tips: EBT benefits can only cover the cost of eligible food items. Taxes, service charges, or tips cannot be paid using EBT funds. Be prepared to cover these additional costs separately.
  4. Local Variations: The availability of participating fast food places and eligible menu items may vary from one location to another, even within the same state. Always verify with the restaurant before placing an order.
  5. Balance Checks: Ensure that you keep track of your EBT card balance. The amount available on your card is limited to your SNAP benefits allocation. Checking your balance regularly will help you stay within your budget.
  6. Cash Withdrawals: EBT cards cannot be used to withdraw cash at fast food places that take EBT. They are exclusively for purchasing eligible food items.
  7. EBT Cardholder Only: EBT cards are non-transferable and can only be used by the household. Sharing or loaning your card to someone else is not allowed.
  8. Report Lost or Stolen Cards: If your EBT card is lost or stolen, report it immediately to your state’s SNAP office to prevent unauthorized use.
  9. Know Your PIN: Keep your Personal Identification Number (PIN) confidential. Do not share it with anyone, as it serves as a security measure for your EBT card.
  10. Compliance with State Guidelines: Each state may have its own specific rules and guidelines for the Restaurant Meals Program. Familiarize yourself with your state’s requirements to ensure you meet the necessary criteria.

By understanding and adhering to these rules and restrictions, you can make the most of the Restaurant Meals Program while staying in compliance with program guidelines and regulations. It’s essential to use your benefits responsibly and within the intended scope of the program to ensure continued access to this valuable service.

Here are some examples of promotions and discounts designed with EBT users in mind:

  1. State-Specific Discounts: In some states, participating fast food places are required to offer discounts on meals purchased with EBT benefits. For instance, New York’s program mandates a 10% discount on restaurant meals for EBT users. These state-mandated discounts are intended to make dining out more budget-friendly for SNAP recipients.
  2. Exclusive Coupons: Certain mobile apps and websites, like Providers, cater to EBT users by offering exclusive coupons and deals for restaurant meals. These digital platforms provide access to special discounts that can be applied when ordering food from participating establishments, further enhancing the affordability of dining out.
  3. Loyalty Programs: Some fast food places that take EBT may also have loyalty or rewards programs that extend discounts or rewards to EBT users. These programs may offer discounts or free items after a certain number of purchases, making it more cost-effective for SNAP recipients to enjoy their favorite meals.
  4. Community Outreach: Local nonprofit organizations and community initiatives may collaborate with fast food establishments to provide discounts or meal vouchers to EBT users during specific events or outreach programs. These efforts aim to support individuals and families in need by ensuring they have access to nourishing meals.
  5. Special EBT Menus: Some fast food places may introduce dedicated EBT menus or value meal options that align with the spending capacity of SNAP benefits. These menus often feature affordable and filling choices, allowing EBT users to maximize the value of their benefits.
  6. Discounted Combos: Fast food chains may offer discounted combo meals exclusively for EBT users. These combos typically include a selection of items at a reduced price, providing an economical way to enjoy a full meal.

John Rene Lastre

Tuesday 15th of November 2022

I feel as though some are missing the point of the Restaurant Meals Program. Last year I had a staph infection that required 3 surgeries including one that removed three bones. I was so week I had to order from Freshly for pre-made meals. I was recently diagnosed with lupus this October 7th. I applied for SNAP and have full benefits. For those unaware many lupus patients, including myself, every joint hurts. Making a meal can be a major undertaking. The same can be said for the elderly. Do we really have to go into why buying raw ingredients be an issue for the homeless?

The program is geared to those people. I live in Illinois where apparently the only place that accepts SNAP currently is Papa Murphy’s. Is it wrong for me to give myself a break when I’m dog tired to pop a ready made pizza once in awhile? I can’t possibly do it with regularity but on occasions when I’m latterly falling asleep while making a meal I don’t think it’s a great sin.

I don't know what else I could do to find any , close enough , that will take my card . I left a message with their cust service but waiting for a response. I also tried to find local places I could find live fruit trees ( not much luck with seeds) But the govt agra. Dept site jumped all over the place & I couldn't find any to buy! The actual gal or 3 gal. Trees on Walmart or Amazon are very expensive. Is there any other way to find fruit trees I can grow. ( Like apple, pear, or cherry) I would appreciate any info you could give.
