Free Cars for Low Income Families: How I Won & You Can Too

Free Cars for Low Income Families: How I Won & You Can Too

Need a car but can’t afford one? It might sound impossible but it’s not. There are real programs that help low income families get free cars. Let me show you how I made it happen and how you can too.

How I Won a Free Car

Our old Expedition was held together by duct tape and prayer when it decided to literally blow a gasket. That old clunker had left us stranded on the side of the road countless times. The fuel gauge didn’t work, it spit out spark plugs and wrecked the radiator. Although we had spent well more than it’s worth in repairs, it just kept leaving us stranded.

I had reached the end of my rope. There was no way we could afford an expensive $5,000 repair to fix the engine. Even with charities paying for part of the repair, there’s no way we could afford it. I had no idea what we were going to do.

That’s when I learned about the Progressive Keys to Progress vehicle giveaway. A VA caseworker told me about it. It sounded too good to be true but she assured me it was. I spent hours creating the perfect application and I didn’t hear back for months. I assumed we’d lost the chance.

But then the call came! My heart soared and then sank a little when I realized the vehicle they offered only had five seats. With five kids and my husband who couldn’t go anywhere without me, we really needed at least seven seats. I knew in my heart that someone else could use that car more than us, so we decided to pass it on to another person in need.

I was so excited to learn that trustworthy groups give free cars to low income families. If you’re struggling to afford a car, don’t lose hope! In this article, we’ll review the real vehicle giveaway programs I’ve found.

Free Cars from Nationwide Giveaways

Programs like Keys to Progress are great. However, each program has its own rules. Don’t get discouraged if one opportunity isn’t a perfect fit for you. There are other options that you may be eligible for!

In this section, we’ll review the some nationwide vehicle giveaways. For local giveaways, check the local section below. Don’t forget to check out our posts about zero-interest low income auto loan programs and free car repair services as well!

Keys to Progress

Progressive has given free cars to low income veterans for over 10 years. They do this through the Keys to Progress program. They give away between 50 and 100 cars per year! They notify the winners each September.

To receive a personal vehicle, you must meet these requirements:

  • You must be a veteran, a Gold Star family, or an active duty military member at E-4 or lower. You will need to prove your eligibility by providing a DD214, LES, DD1300 or DIC eligibility letter.
  • Your household income must be at or below 250% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
  • You must have no major infractions in the past seven years and you must not have any criminal activity on your background check.
  • You must have a valid license and maintain insurance. You also must be able to pay taxes and fees upon receipt of the vehicle.
  • You must be at least 18 years old (or age 19 in Nebraska and Alabama).
  • You must live in one of the 50 US states or Washington DC.
  • You are not eligible if you are an employee of Progressive or any of its affiliate companies. You’re also not eligible if you are a household member or immediate family member of anyone who works for those companies.

If you want to apply, you will need to ask a nonprofit or military organization like VFW to request an application on your behalf. They just need to email [email protected] to request it. Make sure that you fill it out right and submit it on time. The application period is open every year between April 1 and August 2.

Progressive’s Keys to Progress isn’t just about personal vehicles. They also give away commercial vans to veteran-focused non-profits and small businesses. And if you’re an ambitious veteran looking to hit the open road as your own boss, they even give away a semitruck every year! Want to learn more about these options and see how I crafted a winning application? Check out our in-depth Keys to Progress post.

Free Charity Cars

Free Charity Cars was also known as 1-800-Charity-Cars. This organization has provided more than 9,000 free cars to low income families and individuals across the United States. This is one of the oldest and best-known programs that offers this service.

To be eligible for a vehicle from Free Charity Cars, you must meet these requirements:

  • You must be a US resident.
  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must have an income that is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.
  • You must have a genuine need for a vehicle. This means you cannot already have a reliable, working vehicle.
  • You need a valid driver’s license. You must be able to pay for the fees for a vehicle. These fees include title, tags, emissions, insurance, and other costs.

To apply for this program, you need to sign up on their vehicle distribution site. Then, complete the application. They award vehicles as soon as they are available, so they do not have an inventory. It may take a little while for a vehicle to become available and there’s no guarantee that you will be selected.

Cars 4 Heroes

This organization provides free cars. They are for low income veterans, military families, and first responders. They can’t afford their own reliable transportation. They can offer basic cars and sometimes even accessible vans for those who need them.

To apply, select the relevant application on their application page. There are separate buttons for veterans and military, and first responders and civilians.

@Tracy L LaCombe,

Hi Tracy, The same for me. I live in Wisconsin and I was homeless for 20 month’s. I reached out every minute of everyday for help and nothing. I am disabled and get social security disability and they took my foodshare away when I was homeless. Now I have an apartment but my check all goes out for rent for bills. I can’t afford to fix my car or even buy a car. I can’t buy food or non foods. I can’t get haircuts or clothing. I only get $23 dollars foodshare a month so therefore I eat one sandwich a day because that’s all I can afford. Wisconsin is broken and has done me wrong in so many ways. I even applied for a 502 home loan and nothing. It really makes sick and very upset that disabled people and the elderly have to live like this because our government is giving everyone and everything money where it don’t belong. People with kids and the schools and homeless young people get it all. So I know the feeling all to well. I was eveicted and had my property stolen from me and not single person in Grant county will anything about it. I’m so frustrated I just want to stand infront of our government and cuss them out and make them live the way I have to. It makes me sick and angry and frustrated Jeneen Henry
