Toy Assistance: Get Free Christmas Gifts in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Our Lady of Mercy in Baton Rouge invites impoverished families to apply for their Giving Tree program during the holidays. With this program, volunteers purchase toys for children aged newborn to 16 years old and deliver them to the children. They also gift practical gift items to adults, like toiletries, hats, throw blankets, or knit hats. You can find more information on their events flier

The Salvation Army in Baton Rouge invites impoverished families with children aged newborn to 14 years old to apply for their Angel Tree program or Adopt-A-Family programs during the holiday season. They provide gifts like bicycles, toys, special needs items, and clothes during the Christmas holiday for families who don’t have the extra money to spend.

St. George Catholic Church in Baton Rouge offers their services to impoverished families living in East Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. They offer year-long assistance such as emergency food services, clothing vouchers, counseling, referrals, and financial assistance. Additionally, during the holidays they have their Advent Giving Tree that offers free Christmas toys to children aged newborn to 14 years old. The program runs from Thanksgiving to mid-December.

Toys For Tots in Baton Rouge hosts their annual toy drive each year to collect toys for impoverished children during the holidays. Families registered with the program receive several new, unwrapped toys, including educational toys, interactive toys, books, games, and some children even receive a new bicycle and helmet. Families should apply online to request toys from their children.

There is a deadline that usually occurs at the end of November. (November 28th for the 2022 Christmas season). Please do not contact 23rd Marines Truck Company for assistance. You can go to the site or email Toys for Tots directly if you have questions. In Baton Rouge, 20,920 toys were distributed to 10,114 children in the 2021 Christmas season.

Food Assistance: Get Free Food in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

City of Central Food Bank in Baton Rouge invites low-income families, the working poor, and anyone else living in the Easter Baton Rouge area who are in need of food to their food pantry once per month. Upon visiting the pantry, families receive several bags of both perishable and non-perishable food items to feed their family.

Unlike traditional food pantries, this pantry’s setup is  like a grocery store, allowing families to pick the items they want. There is an application process where you will have to provide some documents. They suggest bringing everything you need with you when you return your completed application. 

Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is a large food bank backed by Feeding America. Distributing 16.7 million meals in 2021, this food bank is one of the largest in Baton Rouge. They not only provide food, but also education on how to make food stretch, how to budget, and how to lower bills. During the holidays, they host a Red Bags Holiday Food Drive to help feed local families.

The drive is sponsored by Coca Cola. Red Coca Cola bags pre packed with non-perishable food items are purchased from local grocery stores for $10 by good Samaritans and then brought to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank to be distributed to Baton Rouge families in need. 

The East Baton Rouge Lions Club offers Christmas Gift Baskets for Baton Rouge families in need during the Christmas holiday season. It is unclear if these baskets contain toys as well as non-perishable food items, but you can always send them an email for more information. 

Our Lady of Mercy collects baskets and non-perishable food items for low income families in Baton Rouge through the month of November. Then, they distribute it for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Hot meals are also provided during the two holidays. Check this flier for more information.

I'm recently relocated to baton rouge from New Orleans because of a fire that left me and my kids nothing. I have three kids a daughter whose 9 , a nonverbal autistic daughter whose 6 and a son whose four. I'm in desperate need of Christmas toys for them . I haven't found employment yet and I can't afford to give them a Christmas.
