The Ocean State Libraries system boasts over forty branches in every corner of the state… and those libraries do a lot more than just check out books! You can also get free museum passes, digital resources and more.

Get Free Digital Access

You can get free streaming and downloadable access to countless movies, TV shows, eBooks, music and more. With your library card, you can enjoy all of this content from home.

eZone is Rhode Island’s version of the popular OverDrive content provider. It gives you access to a wide variety of audiobooks, eBooks, movies, and television. They have subsites dedicated to kids, teens, and film lovers.

Freegal is available from some of the Ocean State Libraries. This service allows you to stream and download music for free!

Hoopla is a digital media service provider that can give you access to movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, comic and TV shows on your devices at home! You just have to log in with your library card information. It is not clear if this is available from all Ocean State Library locations or just some branches, like East Smithfield.

Get Free Learning Services

One of the best perks of your library card is access to askRI, the library system’s online reference resource center. AskRI is packed with free resources and help on a ton of topics! They include:

Creativebug has free craft video classes for library patrons. This is offered by several branches, including East Smithfield Public Library.

EBSCOHost is the largest online provider of research material including databases, e-books, and scientific journals. It contains a wealth of educational information.

World Book Online, which is the digital edition of one of the best-known encyclopedia sets!

Learning Express offers career help, guided GED courses, free SAT / ACT practice tests, and homework help! This is one of the coolest benefits from the Ocean State Libraries.

AtoZdatabases grants access to thousands of job listings, executive e-mail addresses, and health care professionals!

Mango offers guided lessons and tutoring to help you learn a new language.

Auto Repair Reference Center can teach you how to repair your car!

Universal Class offers more than 500 online continuing education courses. Everything from computer software to babysitting 101 is covered!

Borrow Stuff (Like Telescopes, Fishing Polse and Cake Pans!)

Before we get into the museum passes (because that’s a long list), I wanted to highlight these cool features from other Ocean State Libraries!

Barrington Library offers a limited technology library where you can check out Roku devices, Binge Box movies, LCD projectors, video magnifiers and even Playaway Launchpad Tablets. They also have a helpful media conversion service and homebound delivery program.

Brownell Library has a Library of Things! You can check out an Orion telescope, T-Mobile WiFi hotspot, fishing poles, tackle boxes, tools, and even cake pans!

Clark Memorial Library offers a media conversion service, a Maker-Space with 3D printers and more and cake pans that you can check-out!

Coventry Public Library offers fishing poles, cake pans, puppets and more!

Cranston Public Library offers a “Cool Tools” loan program, as well as 3D printing services!

Cumberland Public Library offers telescopes, Roku devices and more for checkout!

East Providence Public Library has a notary on staff! They also have hotspots and iPad minis that can be checked out! Isn’t it cool that you can actually check out stuff from the Ocean State Libraries?!

Exeter Library has cake pans, educational games and more that you can borrow. They’re also a Passport Acceptance Facility!

Libraries of Foster have Kindle eReaders that you can borrow!

Glocester Libraries have Apple iPads and Samsung Galaxy Tab 4Nook devices availalbe for loan.

Greenville Library has three telescopes available that you can borrow!

Island Free Library has games, puzzles, camcorders, projectors, digital cameras, CD players, tape recorders, projectors and more that you can borrow.

Jesse M. Smith Memorial Library offers eReaders that can be borrowed for up to 21 days.

Lincoln Library offers Launchpads, Kindles, Mobile Internet Hotspots and more!

Louttit Library has two Kindle devices available for loan, and they expect to add notary services soon.

Middletown Public Library has a community garden, fishing pole lending program (limit 3 per card) and more!

Newport Public Library offers a Maker Lab, with laptops, computers, 3D printers, tabletop and board games, and so much more!

North Smithfield Library has a Create Space that features a VHS to DVD converter, heat press, ink jet printer, die cut machine, and so much more. There is also a 3D printing Pen, Rainbow Loom, Snap Circuits Electrics Kit and Bit Coding Robot for kids!

Pawtucket Public Library has a Mobile hotspot lending program.

Portsmouth Free Public Library has a notary on staff. They also have fishing poles and telescopes for check out. They even have a MakerSpace with a 3D printer you ca use!

Providence Community Library offers internet hotspots, audio kit equipment, and loaded kindles for loan. They also have a notary on site!

Providence Public Library has a Maker Space for youth ages 13+ who would like to learn how to code, sew, design, use 3D printers and other tools.

Rogers Free Library has a device lending program that includes Dell Chromebooks, digital microscopes, vlogging kits, augmented reality globes, iPads, Zenpads and more.

Warwick Library has 3D Printers and even a Virtual Reality system!

West Warwick Library has a free notary on staff! You need to call to schedule an appointment, and bring valid ID.

Woonsocket Harris Library has the Studio Rhode Creation Lab, which includes video editing, green screen, coding, anime art, and 3D printer tools. They also have three notaries on staff that can process five items per person per day.

Free and Discounted Museum Passes

Each individual library branch has unique services. Many of them offer free museum passes and more! It appears that any Ocean State Libraries cardholder can check out ANY pass from ANY library in the system!

There are slight variations on details between branches. It could be that there are different discounts by branch, or it could be that some library systems have not updated their websites recently. We have included all relevant data for you in this list, and encourage you to contact your library directly for more information.

Audubon Society of Rhode Island (Bristol, RI)

Up to six people can enjoy FREE admission to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island Education Center with this pass. This pass can be found at most Ocean State Libraries, including:

You can get free admission for four people to Buttonwood Park Zoo, with this library pass from Tiverton Library!

Capron Park Zoo (Attleboro, MA)

With the library pass, two adults and four children can enjoy free admission to Capron Park Zoo! This pass is available at Rogers Free Library.

Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center (Mystic, CT)

Battleship Cove Maritime Museum (Fall River, MA)

Biomes Marine Biology Center (North Kingston, RI)

According to the OSLRI checkout service, Coventry Library has a museum pass that provides reduced admission for up to six guests to Zoo New England! Zoo New England operates both Franklin Park Zoo in Boston and Stone Zoo in stoneham, Massachusetts. The reduced admission rate is $9 per adult or $6 per child.
