While the programs that fund phones for low-income individuals are becoming more popular, there are still some things you should look for when you’re choosing a Lifeline Provider. Q Link offers smartphones and plans for low-income customers so we took a look at the program. Here’s what we think!
How to Get a FREE Cell Phone and Service thru Q Link!
Q Link provides free cell phones and service through the Lifeline program. The company gives people a chance to get phones that are above and beyond what the government normally provides. They also offer different services to help you get the most out of your communications. Q Link provides their customers with a step-by-step process for getting a phone from a real service provider.
You do not need to do a credit check or pay any application fees with Q Link like you would with a traditional phone provider. Since they work with Lifeline recipients, you’ll have to show proof of eligibility. The application requires you show proof of income and proof of government assistance. Those who qualify for any of these things will also qualify for Q Link’s program:
- Federal housing
- Tribal assistance programs
Q Link may also approve low-income individuals who do not receive government assistance or who may be in the process of applying to receive assistance.
What service does Q Link offer?
Since Q Link is backed by national coverage providers, you can expect to get good service from the company. In addition to the program, you can use that takes advantage of Lifeline, you can also purchase additional minutes from Q Link. The minutes are affordable and easy to add to your phone. We love this because there is no option to add extra minutes to the phone when you run out with some other providers. Q Link makes it so you can use more than just the provided minutes!
Does Q Link work everywhere?
Q Link’s service is available in the following states: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
However, people in very rural areas and in some cities may struggle to get good coverage.
You can use your own phone if you want to!
Even though Q Link provides a phone for the service, you can bring your own phone too! If you already have a phone, you can transfer the service to Q Link. You can also transfer your phone number to Q Link so you don’t have to worry about your loved ones being unable to contact you. Even if you opt to use your own phone when you first start service, you could still get a new one for free if the need arises later on.
What is Lifeline?
Lifeline is a program that provides free phones for low-income individuals. Phones are an important part of our society and they can mean the difference in life and death. Many low-income families cannot afford a cell phone and that’s why the government created the Lifeline program. In some states, individuals can get help with a percentage of their cell phone bill while others can get a completely free phone and cell phone coverage.
The Lifeline program has evolved since it first started. While it initially provided only a basic phone and minutes, the FCC recognized a need for more options since many people may be unable to use the talk capabilities on the phones. Most Lifeline programs across the United States offer a set amount of minutes, data and unlimited texting.
There are some requirements for Lifeline that are set by each state. You’ll need to be a low-income individual to get approved in any state. These programs automatically qualify you to get a free phone and free service. If you’re a tribal member, there are also other ways you can qualify.
To help reduce the amount of time you have to spend learning about getting a phone, the FCC created the Lifeline Program organization site. There, you can find a prescreening tool to help you determine whether you’re eligible or not.
Q Link Wireless is a great option for low income individuals and families.
Overall, Q Link phones are a great deal! Other providers don’t allow you to bring your own phone and may not offer extra minutes at the end of the month, so those are huge bonuses. Again, be aware that you’ll need to check the coverage in your area to make sure you’ll have service!
