Utah law schools offer advice and clinics!

Some law schools in Utah might be able to help you with legal advice. There are attorneys at the law schools who oversee the information law students give. Most are fairly advanced in the degree process and many are very close to graduating.

Advice from law students is different than advice from an attorney, but it might be helpful if you have nowhere else to turn.

The University of Utah’s law school offers free legal clinics that might be able to help if you’re unable to get Utah legal services. These clinics include information on a variety of civil matters including debt law, family law and housing law. The clinics are presented by law students, but they do have a practicing attorney overseeing them. Attending one of the law clinics does not create an attorney-client relationship. Each clinic is held at different times and might be in different areas relative to the university. You might need to register for some of the clinics since space is limited.

Utah legal services are available through BYU. You might be able to use these clinics to get advice from law students who spend a lot of time learning about different legal issues. As with most other legal clinics, attending one of the clinics does not create an attorney-client relationship. Practicing attorney might be available to give direction to the law students, but advice from them does not guarantee attorney rights. The clinics might be helpful if you think you have a legal situation you can handle on your own. They might also be helpful if you’re figuring out whether you need an attorney.

The Park City Bar Association is one of the regional bar associations in Utah. While they primarily work with people who are in Park City, they might be able to help if you’re in another area of Utah that’s closeby. Some bar-certified attorneys who offer pro bono services might also have a sliding scale fee schedule.

If you’re in Salt Lake City or a surrounding area in Salt Lake County, you might be able to find an attorney through the local bar association. This might be able to help you get pro bono help and could connect you with an attorney. Considering the ACLU? Check this out!

The ACLU takes complaints and requests for assistance, but they might not be able to help everyone. In fact, they only take a small percentage of the cases they hear for assistance. If you have a case the ACLU might be interested in, you can reach out for them. However, they want people to know that they don’t help many. Instead, they encourage people to pursue other avenues for Utah legal services. The ACLU might be willing to help in extreme cases where civil rights were infringed on or things that could be major disruptions to constitutional rights.

Instead of giving people no options to help themselves, they have a Utah legal services listing. This listing can connect you with the direct phone numbers for most legal aid throughout the state. The information can be helpful if you’re low-income and in need of attorney representation, but can’t afford it.
