You could be missing out on hundreds of dollars in fresh fruits and vegetables this summer—and we’re not just talking about food stamps. Farmers markets are overflowing with delicious produce, and now more than ever, there are ways to get that healthy food for free or super cheap.
From toddlers to treasured seniors, there are programs that can help you stretch your budget while eating better. Some offer $50, $80, even $120 or more per person—so don’t miss your chance to claim these benefits!
Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)
If you’re over 60 and meet the income guidelines, you could get a one-time benefit between $50 and $80 to spend on fresh produce, herbs, and sometimes even honey.
Who qualifies:
- Age 60+ (sometimes 55+ for tribal members)
- Income at or below 185% of the federal poverty level (around $2,400/month for one person)
How to apply:
- Contact your local senior center or Area Agency on Aging.
- Apply quickly—vouchers are limited and run out fast!
Note: This program has modernized. Many areas now use gift cards or apps instead of paper vouchers. If technology is a barrier, ask your local center for help navigating it.
WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP)
If you’re on WIC, you may also qualify for farmers market vouchers—but you often have to ask for them!
Who qualifies:
- Children and pregnant/postpartum women who receive WIC
Benefit amount:
- Usually $10 to $30 per person
How to get it:
- Contact your local WIC office and ask specifically about FMNP.
SunBucks (aka Summer EBT)
If your kids qualify for free or reduced-price school meals, you may get $120 per child in summer food benefits through this program.
How it works:
- Benefits are loaded onto an EBT card
- It does not affect your SNAP benefits
Important:
- States choose whether or not to participate.
- In most states, eligible families are automatically enrolled.
- If you’re unsure, contact your child’s school or district.
Double Up Food Bucks
This incredible program doubles your EBT money when used at participating markets or stores.
How it works:
- Swipe your EBT card at the information booth
- Get matched funds (e.g., spend $10, get $20)
- Many areas allow up to $20 per day in matches
Where it’s available:
- Not every state offers this, but similar programs may exist under different names like Fresh Bucks, Market Match, and more.
Food Prescription Programs
Doctors and clinics in some states are writing “prescriptions” for produce! These are part of health-based incentive programs for people with certain conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure.
How to qualify:
- Usually requires a medical condition
- Often run by community health centers or nonprofits
What to do:
- Ask your doctor or clinic if they offer a Fresh Food RX program
- You may also spot these programs at pop-up events or farmers markets
Power of Produce (PoP) Club
This adorable kids’ program lets children ages 5–12 earn $2 in tokens each visit by participating in fun activities at the farmers market.
How it works:
- Complete an activity at the market
- Receive tokens to spend on fruits, veggies, and more
How to join:
- Google “Power of Produce + your town”
- Ask at your local farmers market’s info booth
