If you live in Lincoln County, Wisconsin, and rely on a private well for your water, you may be eligible for a free well water testing kit through a special program from the Lincoln County Health Department (LCHD).
This initiative helps protect the health of residents—especially those with weaker immune systems or limited financial resources.
Who Can Get a Free Water Testing Kit?
You may qualify for a free kit if you:
- Have a weakened immune system, or
- Meet low income eligibility guidelines
This program is not available to businesses or to households on city water.
Why Do I Need One?
If you use a private well, you are responsible for making sure your water is safe. Unlike city water, which is tested and treated by local utilities, well water isn’t monitored unless you test it yourself.
Contaminants like bacteria, nitrates, and other harmful substances can enter your water supply without any warning signs. Drinking contaminated water can lead to serious health problems—especially for:
- Children
- Older adults
- Pregnant people
- People with compromised immune systems
For low income households, these risks are even more serious because medical care and treatment may be harder to afford. Regular testing is a simple, effective way to protect your health without adding financial stress.
How to Apply
To see if you’re eligible:
- Fill out the survey in the County’s Google Form; OR
- Call the Lincoln County Health Department at 715-536-0307
The free kits will only be available while supplies last, so it’s a good idea to act quickly if you’re interested. It’s first-come, first-served and you don’t want to miss out.
What If I Don’t Qualify?
Even if you’re not eligible for a free kit, you can still get your well water tested for bacteria and nitrates. Lincoln County operates a certified water testing lab that offers additional information and services. Learn more at the LCHD water testing page.
