    Free Rides for Students

Middle and high school students in Fairfax County can ride Fairfax Connector and Fairfax City CUE buses for free. This program serves students in grades 7-12 who attend Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), private schools, or are homeschooled in Fairfax County or the City of Fairfax.

    Here’s how to apply:

    1. Get an application. Download it from the Fairfax County website or ask for one at your school.
    2. Have a parent or guardian sign it.
    3. Turn it in at your school’s office.
    4. Receive your free Student Bus Pass.

This pass allows free rides from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. If you attend certain schools, your Student Bus Pass will also work on certain Metrobus routes!

    Low Income Discounts

The Transit Ridership Incentive Program (TRIP) helps low-income riders save money on bus fares. If you are eligible, you could save 50% off Fairfax Connector bus fares and you could get free transfers to and from Metrobus and Metrorail.

You may qualify if you live in Fairfax County, the City of Fairfax, or the City of Falls Church and meet one of these requirements:

    • You are 50 or older and make $50,000 or less per year.
    • You receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
    • Your income is at or below 225% of the Federal Poverty Limit (for example, $32,805 per year for an individual under 50).
    • You already get services from another Fairfax County agency and have a caseworker.

If you would like to apply, you just need to fill out an application online at the Fairfax County website. You may have to submit certain documents to prove that you qualify. Once you do, you’ll receive your TRIP card. This is like a regular SmarTrip card but it helps you unlock those half-price rides.
