How to Get Free Clothing in the United States
There are a few agencies that operate on a national level that may be able to help with clothing.
Army Emergency Relief
Soldiers and their families may be able to receive rent relief from Army Emergency Relief (AER). This program provides zero-interest loans and grants to those who need assistance. They can help with rent, security deposits, food, vehicle costs, utilities, funeral expenses, basic furniture, appliance costs, child care seats, dental care, home repair, clothing, and so much more.
Salvation Army Free Clothing Voucher
The Salvation Army operates thrift stores around the United States. In many areas, you may be able to get a Salvation Army free clothing voucher that can be redeemed at their thrift store for free clothing. You will need to inquire with your nearest Salvation Army location for details.
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a nationwide organization that is dedicated to delivering loving, compassionate, person-to-person assistance through local chapters. These organizations are often supported by thrift stores and they often offer free clothing vouchers for families in need. Those clothing vouchers can be redeemed at their thrift stores, similar to the Salvation Army program.
How to Get Free Clothing in Each State
There are resources in each state that may be able to assist with clothing. Some agencies only serve specific geographical areas and others have specific requirements. Some may assist only with work clothes, school clothes or children’s clothes. You will have to inquire with each specific organization for details.
Alabama
Christian Mission Centers (Enterprise)
The Christian Mission Center‘s Benevolence Assistance Program offers assistance with many different needs, including:
- Rent/Mortgage
- Utilities
- Hotel costs
- Transportation (including bus and gasoline)
- Childcare services
- Medical equipment loans
- Food
- Thrift store vouchers (including clothing, furniture, appliances and more)
Christmas Charities Year Round (Madison County)
CCYR offers a Clothing Program for Madison County residents who are in emergent need or who have incomes at or below the area median income. That’s about $82,000 in 2022. They provide free new and gently used clothing for all ages and sizes. An appointment is required for service, and you will need to show proof of ID, residency and income.
Committee on Church Cooperation (Morgan County)
The Committee on Church Cooperation provides assistance with food, gasoline vouchers, toiletries, cleaning products, prescription assistance, furniture, clothing, kitchen essentials and more. All of their services are provided free of charge for Morgan County residents.
Etowah Baptist Mission Center (Etowah County)
The Etowah Baptist Mission Center offers a variety of assistance programs. You will need to make an appointment in order to receive assistance. They can help with clothing, linens, hygiene items and more.
First Baptist Tillman’s Corner (Mobile)
First Baptist Tillman’s Corner offers gas vouchers on a first-come, first-served basis on Tuesday mornings. They also offer assistance with food, clothing, diapers, and Christmas gifts.
Marshall County Christian Services (Marshall County)
According to some resource directories, Marshall County Christian Services may offer free or low-cost furniture and clothing through their programs.
Alaska
General Relief Assistance (Statewide)
General Relief Assistance provides a one-time payment of up to $120 for emergency shelter, utility, food, clothing or burial costs. This program is administered by the Division of Public Assistance and you must submit a written application to the office. You can deliver your application via drop-off, email, fax or regular mail.
Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association (Aleut Region)
The Department of Family and Community Development at APIA offers programs for the Aleut Region. Cash assistance is available to help eligible enrolled tribal members afford essential food, clothing and shelter.
Orutsararmiut Native Council (Bethel)
Eligible Alaska Native and American Indians may be able to receive assistance from this General Assistance program. these funds can be used to help with rent, mortgages, food, clothing and basic necessary utilities. It takes 1-3 weeks to process an application. You must be a Bethel resident to qualify.
Blood-N-Fire (Wasilla)
Blood-n-Fire Ministry partners with six other area agencies to help prevent homelessness. In addition to Alaska rent assistance, they also offer assistance with utilities, heating fuel costs, gas cards, wood heat, food, clothing and more!
Arkansas
Harrison House of Hope (Boone County)
The House of Hope is a day center for homeless people in Boone County. They offer assistance with basic needs, emergencies, help obtaining identification and more. According to their website, this includes restroom facilities, showers and toiletry items, laundry services, clothing, mailing address services, meals, diapers, life skills training, transportation and more. It appears that they also offer housing expense assistance when funds are available.
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church (Hot Springs)
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church offers several community outreach ministries. They provide rent and utility assistance, as well as a shower ministry, clothing closet, job assistance, medication assistance, help replacing lost or stolen documents, and more. Visitors to the shower ministry receive a fresh set of clothes with their shower.
California
Valley Churches United Missions (Santa Cruz County)
The Valley Churches United Missions can assist with single-day bus passes or gas vouchers, as well as driver’s license renewals, car registration, clothing, crisis utility assistance, and more. Gas vouchers are limited to eligible clients who need help getting to medical appointments.
Colorado
Mercy’s Gate (El Paso County)
Eligible clients assistance with clothing from Mercy’s Gate. They can also assist with eye exams, glasses, transportation, household items, medical costs, utilities, rent assistance and more.
Idaho
Mustard Seed Community Assistance Office (Twin Falls)
If you’re wondering how to get free clothing in Idaho, check out The Mustard Seed! The Mustard Seed Community Assistance Office in Twin Falls provides financial assistance, clothing, and more to those who need help. This office also serves hot meals, provides food boxes and other assistance to the community. You will be asked for photo ID and some paperwork will be required in order to receive assistance.
Illinois
Heartline (Woodford County)
Heartline can provide financial assistance with rent, utilities, food, diapers, clothing, household or hygiene products, medications, gas and transportation needs. However, you will have to work one-on-one with a Program Manager in order to receive assistance from this program.
Iowa
CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank (Johnson County)
This incredible organization provides judgment-free assistance for anyone facing emotional, food or financial crises in the Iowa City area. They offer crisis support, as well as assistance with rent, utilities, security deposits, birth certificates, identification, work supplies (such as boots or uniforms), clothing vouchers, bus tickets, prescriptions and even temporary mailing addresses for people experiencing homelessness.
Crossroads of Pella
Crossroads provides financial assistance, which may include rent assistance. They also provide free counseling, holiday help, Medicare help, ESL classes, warming stations, grocery delivery for homebound individuals, support groups and employment services. They also offer free coats from October through January.
Information Referral & Assistance Services (Clinton County)
This is an incredible agency! Information Referral and Assistance Services can provide Iowa rent assistance as well as help with utilities, bus passes, eyeglasses, medications, personal hygiene items, work clothes, holiday food boxes, food, and weekend food packages for children in school.
Montezuma Ministerial Association (Poweshiek County)
The Montezuma Ministerial Association is a partnership of area pastors that administer relief to low income people in the area. They may be able to assist with food, clothes, holiday assistance and more.
West Des Moines Human Services (West Des Moines)
West Des Moines Human Services can assist with rent and utilities. They also offer assistance with handyman services, youth recreational activities, clothing, food assistance and more!
Kansas
Doorstep Topeka (Shawnee County)
Doorstep offers rent assistance, food, clothing, prescription assistance, gas vouchers, bus tickets and more to Topeka residents in need. Clothing assistance is offered once every two weeks.
Let’s Help Inc. (Shawnee County)
Let’s Help Inc. provides many helpful services to the local community. They provide assistance with rent and utility payments, help with prescription medications or tooth extractions, adult basic education programs, workforce services and job training (especially for Kansans age 55+), free community lunches, food boxes, clothing, and work supplies.
Maine
General Assistance (Statewide)
General Assistance from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services can help with rent, mortgage payments, fuel, utilities, medical, dental, prescriptions, burial costs and household or personal supplies (such as toiletries). You may be eligible for this assistance fund if you are unable to afford your own basic needs. You will need to apply in person at your local municipal office.
Community Harvest (Kennebunk, Kennebunkport or Arundel)
Community Harvest offers limited financial assistance to residents of Kennebunk, Kennebunkport or Arundel only. They may be able to assist you with fuel, utility payments, car repair, security deposits, clothing or rent.
Massachusetts
Professional Clothing Closet (Boston University)
The Professional Clothing Closet is located in Room 103 on the third floor of the Yawkey Center for Student Services. Boston University students can choose up to four items to keep for free. This service was established by a student, Tima Dasouki, who noticed that unpaid internships placed a significant hardship on students.
Montana
God’s Love Inc. (Helena)
This organization provides a shelter, as well as meals, clothing, hygiene products and financial assistance. I assume that the financial assistance listed on their website can be used as rent, but you will need to contact them for more information.
Hope Rescue Mission (Missoula)
The Hope Rescue Mission in Montana assists with rent if you are willing to let them advocate on your behalf. They may also be able to assist with gas vouchers, rental applications, deposits, bus tickets, utilities, camping supplies, auto repair, phones, showers, clothing, food and more!
Michigan
Charitable Union (Calhoun County)
Charitable Union can help you with various clothing needs, including free layettes for new babies, school clothes, shoes, winter coats, interview clothing, and even steel-toed boots for certain jobs. They also provide free household goods.
Minnesota
Shakopee Community Assistance (Scott County)
Shakopee Community Assistance can provide diapers, feminine hygiene supplies, free children’s clothing, household items and more. You need to register as a client in order to receive assistance.
Mississippi
Clinton Community Christian Corporation (Clinton)
If you live within the Clinton School District boundaries, then you may be able to receive assistance from Clinton Community Christian Corporation. This organization provides emergency financial assistance with rent, utilities, prescription medications, food, clothing, furniture, and other items. They also offer a Thanksgiving and Christmas program, and assistance with weatherization and housing repairs.
Diaper Bank of the Delta (Mississippi Delta)
Diaper Bank of the Delta provides free sanitary napkins, tampons, diapers, wipes, gently used children’s clothing and more!
Sacred Heart Southern Missions (Several Counties)
This incredible ministry provides many services. They offer direct aid with rent, utilities, food, clothing and gasoline to those with a verified need. They can also assist with applications for state/federal benefits, GED preparation, adult continuing education programs, parenting classes and more. They also have a community garden, HIV/AIDS ministry and so much more.
The Sacred Heart Southern Missions serves Benton, DeSoto, Marshall, Tate, and Tunica Counties.
Wesley House Community Center (Lauderdale County)
The Wesley House assists with rent, utilities, and prescription medications. They also offer clothing, food, Thanksgiving food and Christmas gifts through their Christian Relief program.
Nebraska
Christian Outreach Program Elkhorn (Douglas County)
COPE serves residents in Bennington, Elkhorn, and DC West School Districts with Nebraska rent assistance programs, utility payments, holiday food baskets, school supplies, Christmas programs, home furnishings, clothing, diapers, personal care items, food and other community programs. This is a great resource for low income families in the area!
Nevada
Community Chest (Storey & Lyon Counties)
Since 1997, Community Chest has helped over 3,000 people in Storey and Lyon Counties with emergency food, clothing, rent and utility assistance.
Pahrump Family Resource Center (Nye County)
The Pahrump Family Resource Center can assist with clothing, household goods, furniture and other items. They may also be able to assist with gas vouchers, rental assistance and other basic needs.
New Hampshire
Town & City Welfare (Statewide)
If you’re wondering how to get free clothing in New Hampshire, the answer might be easier than you think! NH state law requires every town and city in the state to offer a welfare program to those who need help. As such, every town and county has a welfare office that can assist with basic needs like rent, mortgage payments, utilities, food, clothing, transportation and prescriptions. The office may be able to help with basic telephone service and even consumable items like diapers, paper products and household supplies.
SHARE (Hillsborough County)
SHARE serves individuals and families in Milford, Amherst, Brookline, and Mont Vernon. The agency provides assistance in the form of food, clothing and some emergency financial assistance. They also provide shoes, school supplies and holiday gifts.
Share Fund
The Share Fund can help residents in Rochester, East Rochester, Gonic, Farmington, Wakefield and Somersworth with their back rent, security deposits, mortgage payments and property taxes. They can also assist with utilities, clothing, food and diapers for households that qualify.
New Mexico
City of Albuquerque’s John Marshall Center (Bernalillo County)
The City of Albuquerque offers assistance at several service centers around the city. Some of them, including John Marshall Center, offer assistance with clothing and other needs.
Holy Cross Catholic Church (Santa Fe County)
The Holy Cross Catholic Church is a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. As such, they assist with utility bills, rent, food and clothing needs within their local community.
St. James Episcopal Church (Taos County)
St. James Episcopal Church has several outreach ministries that bless the surrounding community. They offer limited financial assistance through The Rector’s Discretionary Fund, as well as a food pantry, clothing vouchers, gas heat support, 12-step recovery programs, and CASA services.
Storehouse West
Storehouse West can help Sandoval County residents with their utilities. They can provide up to $125 toward your Waste Management bill or $100 toward your water bills each year.
Their service also assists with holiday meals, clothing, and other emergency needs. IF you’re a low income resident in Sandoval County, you definitely need to check out their programs!
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi (Santa Fe)
The Cathedral offers many ministries, including the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. This program helps with food, rent, utilities, clothing and other basic needs.
North Carolina
Belmont Community Organization
The Belmont Community Organization helps Belmont residents with utilities, rent, medicine, heating fuel, clothing, furniture and more. In order to get help, you will need to provide your photo ID, Social Security number, proof of address and proof of income.
Serving Our Community with Kindness in Springwood
This organization provides assistance to residents of North Belmont or the Springwood Community. Their services include a food pantry and clothing closet, as well as financial assistance with utility bills and prescriptions.
Oregon
FISH of Albany
FISH of Albany collects new and gently-used clothing, shoes, bedding and towels for low income people in the community. Your household can visit the clothing bank up to five times per year.
NAYA Family Center (Multnomah County)
The Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA) serves the Native American community in Portland with Oregon rent assistance programs, as well as longer-term housing stability assistance. They also offer a food pantry, clothing closet, energy services, and more.
Looking Glass Community Services (Lane County)
Looking Glass Community Services provides many services to youth and families in Lane County. They can provide short-term Oregon rent assistance, as well as specialized help for homeless youth including clothing, food, and other basic needs. They also provide educational and vocational services, an independent living program, residential services, mental health services and more.
Junction City Local Aid (Junction City)
Junction City Local Aid can provide assistance with free clothing, medication assistance, food and utility bill assistance.
South Lincoln Resources
South Lincoln Resources gathers clothing, bedding and towels to distribute to low income community members. Their clothing bank offers back-to-school clothes, shoes, newborn clothing and attire for the whole family. The organization will serve anyone, regardless of their location.
Transition Projects (Portland Metro)
Transition Projects provides assistance with rent in the Portland metro area. In addition to their supportive housing services, Transition Projects also has a resource center that provides restrooms, showers, laundry, haircuts, clothing, nutrition services, lockers, mail service, and assistance getting IDs and birth certificates.
Upper Rogue Community Center
If you live in the Upper Rogue Area, you may be able to receive assistance with rent, utilities, food, clothing and even medical equipment from the Upper Rogue Community Center. This organization offers a wide variety of services that help low income residents!
Vina Moses Center (Benton County)
The Vina Moses Center provides an Emergency Financial Assistance Program that can help with rent, utilities, prescriptions and other urgent financial needs. They also operate a free thrift store where everything is free, including clothing, household goods, food and other items donated by the community. The free store does NOT have furniture, full-sized appliances or other large items.
Rhode Island
Family Support Center (Woonsocket)
The Family Support Center offers many different types of assistance for Woonsocket residents. They have limited funding for emergency rental and mortgage assistance. They may also be able to assist with food, utilities, clothing and more.
South Dakota
Love In the Name of Christ of Greater Canton (Canton)
Love Inc. is a great place to go if you’re wondering how to get free clothing. This agency provides help and assistance to those who live in the Greater Canton area. Their organization offers a clothing closet, backpack ministry, baby ministry and may offer some rental assistance according to various sources.
The Cornerstone Rescue Mission (Rapid City)
The Cornerstone Rescue Mission operates several ministries. They assist people who are experiencing homelessness with meals, clothing, shelter, transportation to and from jobs, personal needs items and more. They also provide assistance for veterans and even operate low income Permanent Supportive Housing units. Their website also indicates that they assist with rent and rental deposits but the eligibility requirements are not clear.
Yankton County Welfare Office
The Yankton County Welfare office provides a food pantry, holiday food baskets and financial assistance. According to a flyer on their website, this includes assistance with rent, heating, medications, gas/oil, clothing and other crisis needs.
Vermont
Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (Addison County)
HOPE offers many low income assistance programs. In addition to Vermont rental assistance, this organization may also be able to assist with food, cooking classes, budget counseling, urgent medical and dental needs, job-related assistance, homeless assistance, emergency hotel vouchers, laundry vouchers and more.
Community Emergency Relief Volunteers (Washington County)
This organization assist with clothing, food and more. According to some resource directories, they may also be able to assist with limited housing expenses, such as rent.
JUMP VT (Burlington)
JUMP provides assistance to low income families who need help with utilities, groceries, clothing, and other essential household items. You can receive assistance from JUMP once every three months.
Joseph’s House (Burlington)
Joseph’s House can also provide assistance with clothing vouchers and laundry vouchers. They can also provide assistance with other needs, like food, bus passes, and hygiene items.
West Virginia
Heart & Hand Ministries (Kanawha & Putnam County)
The Social Services program by Heart & Hand Ministries can help with rent, utilities, clothing vouchers, nonskid shoes or steel-toe boots required for employment, diapers, food and more!
Mountain Mission (Kanawha Valley)
Mountain Mission provides a robust financial assistance program for people in the Kanawha Valley. They can provide assistance with housing, utilities, food, clothing, furniture, hygiene supplies, toiletries, medical equipment like canes or wheelchairs, appliances, baby needs and more. Their housing services include help with rent, short-term hotel/motel assistance, basic repairs like hot water tanks and circuit breaker boxes, and disaster recovery.
Wyoming
Converse County Community Services Block Grant (Converse County)
The Converse County CSBG appears to assist with rent, as well as other things like medical, dental, food, vision, employment, work clothing, child care and more. You must meet income limits and other requirements in order to be served.
Interfaith of Natrona County (Natrona County)
If you’re wondering how to get free clothing in Wyoming, check out Interfaith of Natrona County! This organization assists low income people with many things, including help with clothing, laundry, furniture, household items, diapers, blankets, work boots, gasoline, prescriptions and more. They also provide Wyoming rent assistance and utility assistance when the funds are available, but that is not always available and depends on the donations and grants they have received.
Tadan’s Touch. It’s in a small town in Iowa, almost in the middle of major cities like Iowa City, Muscatine & Davenport. Cedar Rapids 43 miles away. FREE clothing, miscellaneous items, shoes, coats, etc. If you’re locally they can assist with furniture & hygiene. I work there & it’s an amazing program with an awesome reason why it started. Taden of the Tadan’s Touch name is the founders son who passed away of a rare cancer at age 7. Todd, the founder turned his grief into generosity for helping others! Love it! Hello! Yes, is there any clothing assistance available in TN? I’m 57 & on SSI with no children, no spouse or anyone else who relies on me for my income other than “my son” my only child – my dog. I currently get SNAP but that’s it. All other assistance I either don’t qualify for because I have no children nor anyone else that relies on me for my income. I could most certainly use an car/SUV/truck so I could get back & forth to see my Mama that’s in a nursing home about 15 miles away but I’ve not been able to see her since Christmas. She needs things from time to time & I can’t deliver her requested items, & it really breaks my heart that she’s so close to me but yet so very far away. I love & miss her so much. This nursing home stay is the 1st time we’ve been away from each other in over 6 years. I need to be able to get to the grocery stores & not have to tip someone else to hand deliver my items to me hours sometimes the next day later. Also, it would help me a great deal to be able to use my own vehicle as it give me back my own independence back again to just be able to go to my Dr.’s appointments, go get my hair cut, be able to just sit with my Mama & visit with her, go to my beloved maternal grandparents gravesites – they pretty much raised me my whole life – it would be nice to set some flowers 🌹 on hers & American 🇺🇸 flag on his, most importantly to me – to be able to take “my boy – my son” to see the Veterinarian as he needs to go from time to time. Actually, I could use a lot of assistance but I realize that this is not forum for that.

Nothing in CT I have lost so much weight now the doctor wants me to gain weight. This year alone I lost over 100 pounds and I wasn’t even trying. Just hungry. I am a 70-year-old senior citizen who lives in Toledo, OH, I relocated here because of my eldest son who’s a veteran loosing our rental house in Hinesville, GA. We are living in unsanitary conditions with my youngest son who seems to very comfortable in these conditions, and also my eldest son seems to be comfortable with these conditions despite the fact that his only child is being bitten by fleas. I am down to two outfits and have no money for clothes, no family or friends that I can live with until I can find a place of my own. Please, I need help ASAP.

Absolutely nothing available in Oklahoma. Except to call 211 and they told me that because I’m in a county that doesn’t provide low income relief …My family is not allowed to go because we have to be on that county. Why is that fair that other counties surrounding me get free vouchers for furniture and clothing and food and furniture and housing and veterinary clinics whereas I live in another County next door and can’t receive anything they told me to call Catholic Charities and the Catholic Charities told me I had to be in a certain County as well so there is no help for Eufaula Oklahoma Macintosh County 74432 and 211 keep saying they’re going to get us help in this County and have done nothing and it’s been a year

@Catherine Marucci, I just recently called 211 and it was a joke. I called them because I need help removing myself from an abusive partner and the living situation I’m in and aside from telling me my county (Cowlitz) had little help available to me, they kept talking me in circles and refused to provide me with resources in Vancouver or Portland, despite them getting me in contact with a battered women’s shelter in PORTLAND (that told me they couldn’t help me at all). The person was basically combative from the beginning of the call and j eventually just hung up the phone because the call made me feel even more hopeless than before I placed the call. But at least they can email you a list of resources a simple Google search can pull up… hopefully they have better luck than I did.
PS: I looked and absolutely no clothing help for us Washingtonians, eh? Southwest (Clark & Cowlitz) Washington would be especially helpful after you folks post the Spokane resources. ????

FISH is in Eugene, also, and possibly other towns. Food too. Depends on the site.
Granges are now housing clothing closets.
Seventh Day Adventists churches traditionally host clothing closets and food pantries, possibly more helps. Depends on the individual church.
Furniture Share is in Albany and Corvallis. Don’t know the counties served.
