What restaurants accept EBT in California in 2025? The answer may surprise you! We’ve found nearly 5,000 restaurants across the state that are prepared to accept SNAP food benefits for hot, ready-to-eat meals.
If you’re like me, this news will probably surprise you. After all, I remember being told over and over again that SNAP food benefits could only be used to purchase groceries! However, there’s a special loophole in the food stamps law called the Restaurant Meals Program that states can use to allow certain people to buy restaurant meals too!
In this post, we’ll explore what the Restaurant Meal Program is, who can use it, and a list of what restaurants accept EBT in California. Don’t forget to check out our list of 1,000 EBT discounts as well!
About the Restaurant Meals Program in California
The Restaurant Meals Program is a special part of the federal food stamps law that allows certain EBT users to purchase hot meals with their food stamps cards. However, there’s a catch: each state can decide whether or not to implement the Restaurant Meals Program for their residents.
California started their RMP program in the early 2000s. It started in San Francisco County and then slowly spread around the state. In 2021, it was finally expanded statewide! That’s why California has the largest and most robust RMP of any state in the country.
Who can buy restaurant meals with EBT in California?
The CalFresh Restaurant Meals Program only works for people who are elderly, disabled or homeless. That’s because this program is designed to help people who cannot safely prepare their own meals at home.
This means you must fulfill at least ONE of these conditions:
- Be aged 60 or older.
- Be disabled and receiving disability benefits.
- Be homeless.
- Be the spouse of a SNAP client eligible for RMP.
It’s important to remember that every single member of your household needs to meet at least one of these requirements. If even one person in your household is ineligible, you won’t be able to use this program.
How can you buy restaurant meals with EBT?
If you qualify, you don’t need to apply. Your caseworker should automatically authorize your account for these purchases. If your transaction is declined and you believe you qualify, please reach out to your caseworker for further information.
Once this feature is activated, you can use your EBT card at a restaurant, similar to how you use it at a grocery store. It covers the cost of hot food. Be sure you tell the cashier you’re using CalFresh benefits so the fast food restaurants accept EBT know not to charge you any sales or meal taxes!
If you’re uncertain, don’t hesitate to ask the cashier which items are eligible for EBT payment. You cannot buy alcohol or other prohibited items with your EBT benefits.
Why does the list of restaurants change so often?
The list of restaurants accepting EBT can change frequently due to various reasons. Sometimes, restaurants may lose their ability to process EBT payments. This can occur if the business owner forgets to renew their SNAP EBT license or has their privileges revoked for violating program rules. These factors contribute to the dynamic nature of the list.
We update this article frequently to keep up-to-date. You can always find the most recent modification date in the header above.
