    Emergency Assistance – Homeless Prevention Program

    The Department of Workforce Services provides rent payment assistance to families facing eviction. This is part of the Emergency Assistance – Homeless Prevention Program (EA).

    What does the EA program cover?

    This program provides immediate, short term assistance to families facing an eviction or at risk of having their utilities shut off. They may provide up to $450 toward rent, or up to $300 toward utilities once during a 12-month period.

    Who is eligible for EA?

    To be eligible for EA, you must:

    • Meet certain income and household asset requirements.
    • Have at least one dependent child under 18 living in the home.
    • Show that you are facing eviction or are having utilities shut off because of past-due payments due to a crisis.
    • Be able to keep your housing or utilities with one-time assistance.
    • Show that you will be able to pay past-due and future payments.
    • Show that you’ve tried all other means to get the money or to set up a repayment plan.

    Emergency Rental Assistance Program 

    If you’re struggling to pay for rent during the COVID-19 pandemic, you may be able to receive assistance through Utah’s Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) program.

    What does Utah’s ERA program cover?

    Utah’s ERA program can cover costs for current rent plus 3 months of future rent, past due rent, a security deposit, utilities, internet, energy costs, and other eligible fees.

    Who is eligible for ERA?

    To be eligible for rental assistance through this program, you must:

    • Meet certain income requirements.
    • Have experienced financial hardship, unemployment, a reduction in income, or incurred significant costs during the pandemic.
    • Be experiencing housing instability during the pandemic.
    • Reside in the household and be on the lease.

    How do I apply for ERA?

    You can apply for Utah’s ERA program here. Be sure that you have all of the required documentation ready before applying.

    Community Action Agencies

    Community Action Agencies can provide rental assistance through the ERA program throughout the pandemic. However, they also provide rental assistance to families facing a temporary financial crisis. Assistance can cover rent deposits or rent payments only. 

    The Salvation Army

    You may be able to receive rent payment assistance through your local Salvation Army chapter. There are many locations across the state, but you may need to live within a certain county or city to receive rent payment assistance.

    Supportive Services for Veterans

    Veterans who are homeless or at risk of facing homelessness may be eligible for rent payment assistance from Supportive Services for Veterans (SSVF). This program is available all across the state of Utah.

    Beaver County

    Canyon Creek Services

    You can get help with rent payments, applying to section 8, rental searches, and landlord mediation through Canyon Creek Services. To be eligible, you must be a victim of domestic or sexual violence.

    Box Elder County

    Bear River Association of Governments

    Residents of Box Elder County can apply for long-term rent payment assistance or emergency rent payment assistance through Bear River Association of Governments. Those who qualify may also be able to get help with water payments.

    Carbon County

    Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments

    Residents of Carbon County may be eligible for rent payment assistance through Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments. In order to be eligible, you must meet certain income requirements and have at least one dependent child (under 18) living with you.

    Daggett County

    Uintah Basin Association of Governments

    Families with children under age 18 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness may be able to receive rental assistance through the Uintah Basin Association of Governments. You must be able to work and demonstrate that a crisis has affected your ability to pay rent. Families who qualify for rental assistance may also receive assistance with water payments.

    Duchesne County

    Families with children under age 18 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness may be able to receive rental assistance through the Uintah Basin Association of Governments. You must be able to work and demonstrate that a crisis has affected your ability to pay rent. Families who qualify for rental assistance may also receive assistance with water payments.

    Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments

    Residents of Emery County may be eligible for rent payment assistance through Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments. In order to be eligible, you must meet certain income requirements and have at least one dependent child (under 18) living with you.

    Garfield County

    You can get help with rent payments, applying to section 8, rental searches, and landlord mediation through Canyon Creek Services. To be eligible, you must be a victim of domestic or sexual violence

    Iron County Care & Share

    Iron County Care and Share can provide assistance with rent, security deposits, utility deposits, utility payments and even application fees! Their case management program can help provide assistance through the grants they receive from the State Community Services Office.

    Juab County

    Six County Association of Governments

    Eligible individuals or families may qualify for one month of rent payment assistance through Six County Association of Governments. When funds are available, the agency can provide up to $750 in rental assistance.

    Millard County

    Six County Association of Governments

    Eligible individuals or families may qualify for one month of rent payment assistance through Six County Association of Governments. When funds are available, the agency can provide up to $750 in rental assistance.

    Piute County

    Six County Association of Governments

    Eligible individuals or families may qualify for one month of rent payment assistance through Six County Association of Governments. When funds are available, the agency can provide up to $750 in rental assistance.

    San Juan County

    Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments

    Residents of San Juan County may be eligible for rent payment assistance through Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments. Eligibility requirements include meeting certain income requirements and having at least one dependent child (under 18) in your household.

    Sanpete County

    Six County Association of Governments

    Through Six County Association of Governments, you may be able to get one month of rental assistance. When funds are available, individuals and families may receive up to $750 toward rent payments.

    Switchpoint Community Resource Center

    Switchpoint Community Resource Center provides a one time rental payment assistance to families who have received an eviction notice. You must have at least one child under 18 living in the household and meet certain income requirements. 

    Wayne County

    Through Six County Association of Governments, you may be able to get one month of rental assistance. When funds are available, individuals and families may receive up to $750 toward rent payments.
