- Wide hallways and doorways for wheelchair access
- Roll-in showers and adapted bathrooms
- Voice-controlled lighting, doors, and appliances
Post-9/11 veterans who have sustained life-changing injuries during combat or military training may qualify. More than 90 specially adapted homes have already been completed—each one a life-changing gift that restores dignity, freedom, and comfort to American heroes.
Operation Homefront
Operation Homefront offers mortgage-free homes through a two-year transitional housing program designed to set veterans up for long-term success. During the program, you’ll work closely with a caseworker to:
- Build savings and financial stability
- Strengthen your budgeting and money management skills
- Reconnect and engage with your local community
Veterans from any era and surviving spouses are welcome to apply. Deployment or injury is not required.
Building Homes for Heroes
Building Homes for Heroes provides mortgage-free homes customized to meet each family’s unique needs—including adaptations for physical disabilities and psychological challenges like PTSD or traumatic brain injuries.
You may qualify if you are an honorably discharged veteran or Gold Star families who do not currently own a home.
Military Warriors Support Foundation
The Homes4WoundedHeroes program from the Military Warriors Support Foundation gives mortgage-free homes to combat-wounded veterans and unremarried Gold Star spouses. It also includes three years of financial mentoring to help families save money, pay off debt, and succeed as homeowners.
To qualify, you must be honorably retired or within 90 days of discharge from the military. You must also not already have a mortgage. This program helps veterans and their families build a strong future in a safe and stable home.
Tunnel to Towers
Tunnel to Towers builds high-tech smart homes for veterans and first responders who have experienced catastrophic injuries in the line of duty. These homes are customized for maximum accessibility, with features like automated doors, widened hallways, and voice-controlled systems to support independent living.
The foundation also supports families of the fallen through two special programs. The Gold Star Family Program provides mortgage-free homes to surviving spouses of military members who died in service, while the Fallen First Responder Program pays off mortgages for the families of law enforcement officers and firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Heroes to Homeowners
This program provides mortgage-free homes to post-9/11 combat veterans who have a VA disability rating of 80% or higher. It’s designed to give wounded heroes a fresh start in a stable, supportive environment.
To qualify, you must be willing to relocate. Preference is given to veterans who have received commendations such as the Purple Heart or Combat Infantryman Badge. The goal is to honor service and sacrifice by helping veterans build a better future in a home they can truly call their own.

H-E-B’s Homes Built for Heroes
This program partners with Building Homes for Heroes to provide customized, mortgage-free homes for injured veterans living in Texas. Each home is thoughtfully designed to support independence and improve daily life for those with physical challenges.
Special features include roll-in showers, pull-down shelving, and lowered countertops—making everyday tasks easier and more accessible. These homes are built to fit the unique needs of each veteran, helping them live more comfortably and confidently.

Even though these homes are mortgage-free, they aren’t entirely cost-free. You’ll still need to plan for:

- Homeowners insurance
- Utilities and maintenance
- Possible relocation costs
