The Maryland Volunteer Attorneys program could provide help if you need legal aid in Maryland. There are programs available that the volunteer lawyers work with and that could help you with your civil case. If you meet their requirements, attorneys are available and they approve your case, you might be able to get help. The attorneys work on a volunteer basis and may choose to deny help to anyone for any reason.
Attend a Maryland law school clinic for legal aid in Maryland.
The University of Maryland School of Law might be able to provide answers to your questions through their clinical law program. There are volunteer attorneys and student attorneys who might be able to help you get answers to basic legal questions. Attorneys might also be able to provide you with information about getting your case heard. They could also help you get access to a low-cost or free attorney. Keep in mind that student attorneys run the clinical program and they might be unable to help with very complex cases.
The University of Baltimore’s legal program uses student attorneys who can answer some legal questions. They do this through their low-income free clinics. Student attorneys might be able to help you with employment law, housing law and other civil areas of law.
Counties might offer Maryland legal aid.

Allegany County
The Allegany County Law Foundation might be able to provide Maryland legal aid to people who are in the county and are dealing with a civil case, if your case meets their guidelines and you meet their income requirements. While they do provide help to people who are in need, volunteer attorneys might not always be available.
Anne Arundel County
The Anne Arundel County Bar Association does not provide direct help to people who are in need. Instead, they have a list on their website of attorneys in the county who are able to provide their services for free. You can use the list to contact attorneys to find out if they might be able to represent you or answer questions about your case.
Baltimore County
The Baltimore County Bar Association has resources available that might be able to help you find legal aid in Maryland. You can use their list of pro bono attorneys to find an attorney who might be able to represent you free of charge. The list is comprehensive and includes information on the best way to contact each of the attorneys. The bar association is unable to provide help directly to individuals looking for an attorney.
Calvert County
The Southern Maryland Center for Family Advocacy might be able to help if you’re in Calvert County and you have a case related to family law. The program works by helping people find information to help them with legal cases. They also have attorneys they regularly work with to help families who are in need of representation. You could even find an attorney who might represent you for free.
Chesapeake County
Residents of Chesapeake County might be able to get Maryland legal aid through the Chesapeake Legal Assistance program. This program uses attorneys who are willing to work pro bono to help with a variety of civil legal cases.
Harford County
If you’re in Harford County, the bar foundation might be able to provide you with information on attorneys in the county who provide their services for free. You will need to contact the attorneys yourself. Not all attorneys listed are guaranteed to provide help at all times, but they might be able to help you find the assistance you’re looking for. Some attorneys might be able to offer smaller services, like consultations, for free while others offer full representation services.
Howard County
Are you a resident of Howard County? Hope Works is a program that could provide you with legal assistance. They work with specific types of civil cases and might be able to find an attorney who can represent you throughout your entire case. They might also be able to provide you with resources you need to get support while you’re going through legal cases. The organization has income requirements and residency requirements you’ll need to meet to be able to qualify for help through their program.
Montgomery County
Are you looking for legal aid in Montgomery County? The county has Maryland legal aid resources available that might make it easier for you to find an attorney who can represent you. You will need to qualify for program requirements and get help with an attorney who provides pro bono services. Their programs are all listed through the bar association. While the association is not able to give help directly to people who are looking for an attorney, you can use their resources to find an attorney. You might also be able to find legal aid. They list contact information for these attorneys and legal organizations that provide help. Many of the attorneys and legal organizations listed have income requirements.
Prince George’s County
The Prince George’s County Bar Association does not provide legal aid in Maryland, but they might be able to help you find an attorney or an organization that does. They have a listing of legal aid resources you can look at to determine whether you qualify and if you’ll be able to use one. They also have a listing of attorneys who do pro bono work. Some attorneys in the county might work on a sliding scale that’s based on your income. You can find information on these attorneys through the bar association too.
Queen Anne’s County
Mid Shore Pro Bono could provide legal aid resources to people who are in Queen Anne’s County. The program helps people who are low-income and meet their guidelines get attorney assistance. They have attorneys who represent people and answer questions about civil legal cases for free.

The Maryland Bar Association provides information on attorneys who do work for free. Even though the bar association does not provide legal aid in Maryland, you might be able to find an attorney who works for free!
Can the ACLU help you with legal aid in Maryland?
If your first thought is to turn to the ACLU for help with your civil legal case, you might want to rethink that. They generally do not take on cases and they focus more on cases that are atypical. While the ACLU probably won’t be able to represent you, they do have helpful information about your civil rights and what you can do to protect them!
