There are programs available that might make it easier for you to get legal aid in NJ. We found options for civil legal cases. While these programs are great for low-income residents who need help with civil cases, those with criminal cases might be able to get the help they need through the public defender’s office.

Legal Services of NJ provides legal aid in NJ to people who are low-income. If you you meet the income requirements, you might be able to get help with your case. The organization has attorneys who are willing to do pro bono work. Depending on your case, an attorney might be able to help you with the advice you need. If you and your case qualify, you could get an attorney who can represent you in court.

The Volunteer Lawyers for Justice are bar-certified attorneys who volunteer their time to help people who are low-income in New Jersey get the representation they need. You might be able to qualify if you meet income and other guidelines the organization has in place.

Got a specific legal need? You could get help!

The American Indian Law Alliance might be able to help if you’re in New Jersey and qualify for their services. They help American Indians get assistance with a variety of legal issues and might even be able to help with attorney representation in some cases. The organization works with many different tribes and might be able to help you depending on your tribe affiliation.

The Safe House NJ is intended for victims of domestic violence. In addition to their shelter services and emergency care services, they offer legal aid in NJ. If you are a victim of domestic violence, you could get help with the organization. Even if you do not have to use the shelter, you might still be able to get representation.

New Jersey’s DASI might be able to help if you’re in need of an attorney for a domestic violence or difficult family law situation. They can provide resources that might be able to help you in addition to attorneys who are willing to work for free. You might be able to get help if you are a victim of domestic violence regardless of the income you have.

Consider NJ law school clinics.

Rutgers School of Law Urban Legal Clinic might be able to help you get answers to basic legal questions. If you do not have an attorney to represent you and you’re in need of help through this program, you might be able to get assistance. In addition, they offer a legal assistance program that could help you find an attorney who can represent you. If you’re looking for pro bono services or legal aid in NJ, Rutgers might also be able to connect you with those.

The Seton Hall University’s Law School offers a legal clinic for people who are in need of help with a variety of legal issues. The law school might be able to help people who are struggling with a variety of issues. You do not have to meet income requirements and you do not have to pay for the clinic, but you should reserve a seat early as spaces can fill up fast.

There are some counties in New Jersey that might be able to help you. If you’re dealing with a legal issue, they might also be able to provide an attorney. You can find legal aid in NJ that’s specific to your county!

Bergen County

If you’re in Bergen County, you might be able to get legal aid in NJ through the Northeast NJ Legal Services program. This program can help low-income individuals connect with an attorney who might be able to answer legal questions and represent them in court. The program is intended for people who are low-income, but your eligibility might also depend on other factors.

Central Jersey

Central Jersey Legal Services might be able to provide help if you’re struggling with a civil legal case. The program has volunteer attorneys. Essex County

Northwest New Jersey

Residents of counties in Northwest New Jersey might be able to get help through the Legal Services of NWNJ. The program has attorneys who are willing to provide legal aid in NJ to people who need help. If you meet their income and other requirements and if your case qualifies for help, you might be able to get an attorney who is bar-certified and can represent you.

Mercer County

Are you a resident of Mercer County? The Mercer County Bar Association has a listing of attorneys who provide legal aid in NJ. You might not be able to find help directly from Mercer County, but you could find assistance through the attorneys who offer their services. The directory makes it easier for you to find an attorney who can represent you no matter what type of civil legal case you have.

Northeast New Jersey

If you’re in Northeast New Jersey, you might be able to get help through NE New Jersey Legal Services. The organization works with people who are low-income and in need of help with legal issues. If you’re struggling to find an attorney who can represent you in your legal case, this organization might be able to provide you with the assistance you need.

Passaic County

Residents of Passaic County might be able to get legal aid in NJ. If you’re in Passaic and you need help with your civil legal case, the NJ legal services organization could provide you with assistance. They offer services like free consultations, answers to basic questions, brief meetings with attorneys and, in some cases, client representation for free. Using the organization might make it easier for you to get help with your legal case.

South Jersey

South Jersey Legal Services could make it easier for you to get help with your legal case. If you have a civil case and you need help with attorney representation, the program might be able to provide you with different levels of assistance. They could offer you help through a free consultation or brief answers to simple questions. They might also have attorneys who are able and willing to represent you pro bono in court.

Union County

Union County residents could get legal aid in NJ through the legal services organization. This organization might make it easier for people who are trying to get help with the program options they have and they might make it easier for people to get representation in court. If you’re in a legal situation, there might be hope for you. You could get help through Union County Legal Services to make sure you’re able to have an attorney.

Use the NJ bar for more resources.

Even though the bar association cannot provide legal aid in NJ, they might be able to help you find attorneys who are willing to do it or who can offer you their services for free. Their directory allows you to learn more about what’s available and what attorneys can offer you no matter what area of New Jersey you’re in. Many of these attorneys require you to be low-income to get help, but some may offer it to people who are low-to-moderate income.

Are you considering the ACLU for help?

People who are in need of legal assistance might want to turn to the ACLU for help. While the ACLU can be very helpful in some situations, they might not be the best first resort for people struggling for legal representation. They can be very effective, but they might take up to six weeks just to reply to a case. Even then, they might not be able to represent you.
