Why might an Indiana SNAP card stop paying for an energy product ordered from a Michigan Walmart?
Indiana has restricted SNAP purchases of energy drinks and other sweetened beverages since January 1, 2026. Whether a specific “drop-in” product is blocked can depend on how the product is classified in the retailer's system, so the most reliable way to resolve a particular item is to check its label and ask Indiana FSSA or the retailer.

What You Need to Know
Indiana’s Smart SNAP rules took effect January 1, 2026. Indiana says SNAP benefits can no longer be used for sugary drinks, and its retailer guidance specifically says energy drinks are not allowed, including zero-sugar energy drinks such as Celsius.
There is also a separate longstanding federal rule: products carrying a Supplement Facts label are treated as supplements rather than SNAP-eligible food, while many products with a Nutrition Facts label can qualify under the ordinary federal rules.
A product ordered from a Michigan Walmart can therefore be confusing because several things may affect what happens at checkout: the product’s federal SNAP classification, Indiana’s Smart SNAP restrictions, and the retailer’s point-of-sale coding.
For a particular product, check whether it has a Nutrition Facts or Supplement Facts label. If it appears to be incorrectly blocked or allowed, Indiana FSSA lists DFRinquiries@fssa.in.gov for participant questions about Smart SNAP.
