23 Alabama Rent Assistance Programs

If you live in Alabama and are looking for rent assistance, you’re in luck. There are multiple rent assistance programs throughout the state of Alabama! We have made finding rent assistance programs easy for you by compiling the resources here.

Statewide Alabama Rent Assistance Programs

Alabama has many statewide programs available. The nationwide Emergency Rental Assistance Program is available throughout Alabama. Additionally, Community Action Partnership and the Salvation Army are great resources that have locations throughout the state. Please keep reading for local resources!

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army offers social services throughout the state of Alabama. Many locations offer financial assistance for rent and/or utilities. Each location offers different services, so please call your local Salvation Army to verify.

Community Action Partnership

Community Action Partnership is a social services agency with locations throughout Alabama. Although most of the agencies offer utility assistance, not all the Community Action Partnership locations offer rent assistance. Please keep this in mind as you contact your local Community Action Partnership to confirm services.  For a list of their services and to make an appointment, please see your local agency’s website.

Catholic Social Services of West Alabama

Catholic Social Services of West Alabama Is located in Tuscaloosa but offers food and financial assistance to residents of Marion, Winston, Walker, Lamar, Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Hale, Marengo, and Fayette counties.

Local Alabama Rent Assistance Programs

Alabama has many local rent assistance programs throughout the whole state! Many of these programs are run by churches and small organizations. Funding changes so it is always a good idea to call or email to confirm their services. The local rent assistance programs are organized for you here by county or city.

Calhoun County

Interfaith Ministries

Interfaith Ministries serves residents of Calhoun county and offers one-time financial assistance for past due rent. To apply, please complete the Emergency Assistance Application online. Please note, you will need to provide your picture ID and social security card.

Cleburne County

Hearts of Cleburne

Hearts of Cleburne offers rent and utility assistance to residents of Cleburne County. Hearts of Cleburne requires picture ID for all adults living in the home, social security cards for everyone living in the home, and proof of income. For more information, please call their hotline at 256-463-9535.  

Coffee County

Christian Mission Center (Enterprise)

The Christian Mission Center‘s Benevolence Assistance Program offers assistance with many different needs, including:

  • Rent/Mortgage
  • Utilities
  • Hotel costs
  • Transportation (including bus and gasoline)
  • Childcare services
  • Medical equipment loans
  • Food
  • Thrift store vouchers (including clothing, furniture, appliances and more)

Dallas County

Dallas County Family Resource Center

Dallas County Family Resource Center provides emergency assistance to residents of Dallas County.  To qualify, you must be a resident of Dallas County and be at risk of eviction. Please call 334-874-7785 for more information.  

Etowah County

Catholic Center of Concern

The Catholic Center of Concern offers financial assistance to those impacted by COVID-19. To apply, you must call to make an appointment and then go to their office to complete an application. Please note, you will need to bring your social security card and state ID.  To make an appointment, please call 256-546-0028 between 9am-11:30am and 1pm-3pm on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month.

Etowah Baptist Missions Center

Etowah Baptist Missions Center offers financial assistance for rent as well as other services. To apply please call 256-562-2980 to make an appointment. Please note, they ask for paper proof of income and paper proof of all monthly expenses as well as picture ID and social security cards for each member of the household.

Jefferson County

Greater Birmingham Ministries (GBM) (Birmingham)

GBM offers rent and utility assistance to residents of the Birmingham area. Funds are limited so they are only able to assist 16 people a month. To apply, you must call 205-716-2168 at 9am on the first Wednesday of the month (except July, December, and January). Only the first 16 people will receive an appointment. Please note to qualify your income cannot exceed $37,010 per year.

Lee County

Alabama Rural Ministry

Residents of Lee County (excluding Auburn and Opelika) who are low income and have experienced a 30% or more loss from COVID-19, may be eligible for assistance from Alabama Rural Ministry. Assistance may cover up to 3 months of past due expenses (not exceeding $1,500). To apply, please call 334-501-4276 ext.500.

St. Mary of the Mission (Opelika)

St. Mary of the Mission is a part of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. If you belong to the parish or live in the parish area you may be eligible for emergency financial assistance. For more information please call 334-749-8359.

Madison County

HAP: Huntsville Assistance Program and Clearing House

HAP is a ministry that offers financial assistance and referrals to residents of Madison County. Individuals will be interviewed by a congregation member and potentially given referrals and assistance. For more information, please visit their website or call them at 256-534-1928.

St. Joseph Catholic Parish (Huntsville)

St. Josephs is a part of the Society of St. Vincent de Pau (SVdP). SVdP is an international catholic ministry devoted to providing parishioners and those who live within the parish area with assistance. To apply for assistance, please call 256-539-7476 at 9am on Wednesdays.

Holy Spirit Catholic Church (Huntsville)

Holy Spirit Catholic Church is a part pf the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. If you are a parishioner or live in the parish area of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, you may be eligible for rent assistance. To apply for assistance, please call 256-881-9663 between 8:15am-9:15am on Wednesdays. If you would prefer the call in Spanish, please call 256-881-2211.

Marshall County

Christian Community Outreach (Albertville)

Christian Community Outreach serves Albertville and the some of the surrounding areas. They may offer rent and utility assistance as well as other services. Please email [email protected] or call 256-659-6802 for more information.

Mobile County

Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SDvP) (Mobile)

SDvP District Council of Mobile offers services to individuals living in Mobile. Most SDvP councils provide emergency rent assistance, but it is always important to call and confirm services. For more information or to make an appointment, please call 251-243-4061.

Montgomery County

First Baptist Church Caring Center

The Caring Center of First Baptist Church of Montgomery offers financial assistance as well as other services. For more information and to set up an appointment, please call 334-834-6310.

Holy Spirit Parish

Holy Spirit Parish is a part of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SDvP). SDvP often provides financial assistance to parishioners and those who live in the parish area. To apply for assistance please call 334-235-5976 or email [email protected].

Morgan County

Beltline Church of Christ (Decatur)

The Benevolence Committee at Beltline Church of Christ may provide financial assistance in increments of up to $80 to residents of Decatur and Troy Alabama. To apply, please call the church at 256-566-6221 on Wednesdays starting at 8:30am. Please note, they only take a limited number of appointments per day so calling close to 8:30am is recommended.

Pike County

Beltline Church of Christ (Troy)

Russell County

Chattahoochee Valley Episcopal Ministry (CVEM)

CVEM is located in Columbus GA but serves the surrounding areas including Russell County Alabama. CVEM offers rent assistance as well as other services. To apply, please call 706-327-2836 and leave a voicemail. They work through their requests on a first come first serve basis and are unable to help all the applicants each month. If you have not heard back from them, please call again and leave another voicemail at the beginning of the next month.

Shelby County

Shelby Emergency Assistance (SEA)

SEA provides social services (including rent assistance) through a licensed social worker. The social workers not only offer assistance, but also help clients create plans. Please call 205-665-1942 to make an appointment.

Tuscaloosa County

Catholic Social Services of West Alabama

Catholic Social Services of West Alabama Is located in Tuscaloosa but offers food and financial assistance to residents of Marion, Winston, Walker, Lamar, Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Hale, Marengo, and Fayette counties. To apply for services you can call 205-759-1268 Monday-Wednesday from 9:30am-11:30am or complete this form for rental assistance.
