How to Apply for Food Stamps

Apply for food stamps today! Food stamps, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, provides needed money for food to low income families. In addition to hundreds of dollars per month in food benefits, you can also get museum discounts and discounts at certain retailers just for having an EBT card!

Although this is a federal program, it is administered at a state level and so some details vary by state.

Who can get food stamps?

Any low income individual or family can apply for food stamps as long as they meet certain income and resource limits.

These limits are somewhat complicated to explain because theVre are many different allowances. When in doubt, just apply for food stamps and see what happens!

For example, you must have $2,250 or less in countable assets (or $3,500 or less if you are age 60+ or disabled). Your home and property do not count toward this limit. Also, the limit does not apply if you receive SSI, TANF or pension/retirement benefits. Vehicles and other assets are managed at the state level.

Your income generally must be 130% of the federal poverty guideline or less. However, certain types of disability payments do not count. Also, the program doesn’t count 20% of your earned income. The program also reduces your earnings by $160-$170 for a household deduction. They also do not count any money that you spend on medical expenses, dependent care, child support, excess shelter costs and utilities.

Able-bodied adults without dependents must meet work requirements in order to receive food stamps. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 49 who has no dependents and is not disabled must meet these requirements.

What is food stamps? Why should I apply for food stamps?

The food stamps program deposits a certain amount of money on an EBT card each month. This money can be used to purchase certain items, including food and some gardening supplies. In some states, certain people can also use their food stamps card at restaurants like McDonald’s, Little Caesar’s and Denny’s.

In addition to these benefits, some museums, retailers, and cities offer exciting discounts and freebies for EBT cardholders. They use your EBT card to prove that you are low income and qualify for these deals. You can find the EBT discounts and deals for your state by clicking here!
