California’s Area Agencies on Aging offer health promotion programs for adults 60 and older. There’s no income requirement to participate.

These programs cover everything from falls prevention and exercise to managing chronic conditions. The activities available depend on where you live.

Here’s what’s offered and how to find a program near you.

What Kinds of Programs Are Offered?

California’s Title III-D Health Promotion programs are evidence-based, meaning research has shown they can improve health and well-being or reduce the risk of disease and injury among older adults.

According to the California Department of Aging, program topics include:

    • Falls prevention: Learning ways to reduce your risk of falling and getting injured.
    • Physical activity and exercise: Activities that help older adults stay active.
    • Managing chronic conditions: Programs addressing arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.
    • Bone health: Information and activities related to osteoporosis.
    • Weight management: Programs addressing obesity and related health concerns.
    • Mental health: Activities that support emotional well-being.
    • Caregiver support: Programs that help people caring for others.

These programs are designed to help older adults build skills and habits that support their health.

Not every county offers the same activities. Your local Area Agency on Aging can explain which evidence-based programs are currently available.

    Where Are Classes Held?

Depending on the program and your location, activities may take place at:

    • Senior centers
    • Community centers
    • Senior meal sites
    • Participants’ homes

Some programs involve group classes, while others may use different formats.

Ask your local Area Agency on Aging where activities are held and whether any options are available at home.

    Who Can Join?

Adults age 60 and older can participate in California’s Title III-D Health Promotion programs.

According to the California Department of Aging:

    • You must be 60 or older.
    • There is no income requirement.
    • There are no other general eligibility requirements.

You do not have to meet a low-income threshold to participate.

If you’re under 60 and your spouse is eligible, you can also ask your local Area Agency on Aging whether you may participate together.

Although the statewide eligibility rules are broad, the specific activities offered depend on local availability.

    Does It Cost Anything?

These programs receive funding from federal, state, and local sources. They may also accept voluntary contributions.

The California Department of Aging’s program description does not list a standard participation fee for every activity.

Before joining, ask your local Area Agency on Aging whether the program you’re interested in has any costs or accepts voluntary donations.

How Do I Find a Class?

The easiest way to get started is to contact the Area Agency on Aging that serves your county.

You can find your local agency through the California Department of Aging’s official Find Services in My County page.

Once you’ve located your agency, ask about Title III-D Health Promotion or evidence-based health programs for older adults.

    You can also ask:

    • Are there any falls prevention or exercise programs available?
    • Do you offer classes about managing arthritis, diabetes, or other chronic conditions?
    • Where are the activities held?
    • Are there any costs or voluntary contributions?
    • How do I register, and when does the next program begin?

Each Area Agency on Aging works with local providers, so schedules and available activities may differ from county to county.

If the program you want isn’t currently offered, ask whether there are upcoming sessions or other local options.

Is There Other Falls Prevention Help?

Yes. If you’re worried about falling at home, California also has a separate Dignity at Home Fall Prevention Program.

Unlike Title III-D health promotion activities, Dignity at Home focuses on making living spaces safer.

Depending on eligibility and local availability, assistance may include:

    • Home safety assessments
    • Fall prevention equipment
    • Home modifications that help reduce fall risks

Dignity at Home has different eligibility rules. Applicants generally must be 60 or older or have a disability, meet income requirements, and have experienced a fall or be at risk of falling or institutionalization.

The program uses an income limit based on 80% of the area’s median income, so it is not open to everyone regardless of income.

Ask your local Area Agency on Aging whether Dignity at Home services are available in your community and how to request assistance.

    Relief Recap

California’s Title III-D Health Promotion programs give adults age 60 and older opportunities to learn about falls prevention, physical activity, chronic disease management, and other ways to support their health.

There is no income requirement or other general eligibility requirement beyond being 60 or older. However, the activities offered, schedules, locations, and any costs depend on local programs.

If you’re interested, visit the California Department of Aging’s Find Services in My County page and contact your local Area Agency on Aging.

Ask what health promotion or falls prevention programs are available near you. A local activity may help you stay active, learn useful skills, and feel more confident managing your health.
