    New York: CCNY Emergency Grants Could Help Students With Housing, Utilities, Healthcare & More

    A surprise expense can make staying in college a lot harder. If you’re a student at the City College of New York and an unexpected financial emergency is threatening your ability to stay enrolled, there’s a program that could help.

    The CCNY Emergency Grants Program provides financial assistance for certain sudden, short-term emergencies. Fall 2026 applications are being reviewed now, and funding is limited.

    Here’s what you need to know before you apply.

    What Is the CCNY Emergency Grants Program?

    The Emergency Grants Program helps eligible CCNY students deal with unexpected financial emergencies that could interfere with their ability to continue their education.

    This isn’t general financial aid for regular or predictable expenses. The program is designed for immediate, documented emergencies.

    CCNY began reviewing Fall 2026 applications on September 21, 2026.

    Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until available funding is depleted, so there isn’t currently a fixed closing date.

    Who Can Apply?

    CCNY lists several eligibility requirements, and these are not alternatives. You’ll generally need to meet all of the program’s requirements.

    To qualify, you must:

    • Be matriculated in a CCNY degree program;
    • Have at least a 2.0 GPA as an undergraduate or 3.0 GPA as a graduate student;
    • Have no outstanding tuition owed to CCNY;
    • Be in good academic standing;
    • Have no conduct violations;
    • Have a current financial emergency; and
    • Be actively registered when you apply and when you receive the award.

    There’s also an important rule for newer students.

    If you don’t have an established GPA yet, CCNY says you’ll need to wait until the following semester to apply.

    CCNY also gives priority to students who haven’t received an Emergency Grant before.

    What Emergencies Could Qualify?

    CCNY lists a wide range of situations that may qualify for emergency assistance.

    Examples include:

    • Loss of childcare;
    • Homelessness resulting from loss of housing;
    • Recent temporary job loss;
    • Overdue rent;
    • Overdue utility bills;
    • Overdue medical bills;
    • Eyeglasses;
    • Hearing aids;
    • Major dental surgeries;
    • Durable medical equipment;
    • Emergency travel involving an immediate family member;
    • A winter coat or interview suit;
    • Groceries;
    • Monthly unlimited MetroCards; and
    • Replacement of essential belongings following theft.

    The important part is that the expense needs to involve a current financial emergency.

    Regular expenses and costs that aren’t considered emergencies may not qualify.

    How Much Could You Receive?

    CCNY does not currently publish a specific maximum dollar amount on its public Emergency Grants Program page.

    Instead, awards depend on your documented financial need and the funding available.

    CCNY also says grants are subject to a lifetime maximum award amount, although the current public page doesn’t state what that dollar maximum is.

    Students are limited to one Emergency Grant during their enrollment at CCNY.

    That means this isn’t assistance you can receive every semester, so it’s especially important to use the program for a genuine emergency.

    Documentation Is Important

    Don’t submit the application first and assume you can send your paperwork later.

    CCNY says applications will not be processed unless all requested documentation is submitted with the application.

    The exact documents you’ll need will depend on your emergency.

    For example, you may need a bill, overdue notice, estimate, or other documentation showing what happened and how much assistance you need.

    Before submitting, make sure your application clearly explains the emergency and includes the documents CCNY requests to support it.

    How Do You Apply?

    Applications are submitted through CCNY’s online Emergency Grants application.

    Before you submit:

    1. Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements.
    2. Clearly explain the emergency you’re experiencing.
    3. Gather the required supporting documentation.
    4. Double-check that you’ve included everything requested.

    Because applications are being reviewed while funding remains available, there’s an advantage to getting a complete application submitted rather than waiting until later in the semester.

    Is the Fall 2026 Program Still Open?

    As of October 2, 2026, CCNY’s official program page still says Fall 2026 applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until funding is depleted.

    The page does not currently indicate that Fall 2026 funding has been exhausted.

    That means eligible students can still apply.

    However, because there isn’t a fixed closing date, availability could change once the program’s funding runs out.

    Check the official CCNY Emergency Grants Program page for the latest status before applying.

    Have Questions?

    If you’re not sure whether your situation qualifies or what documentation you need, you can contact CCNY’s Student Affairs Central Office.

    Relief Recap

    If you’re a CCNY student dealing with a sudden financial emergency, the Emergency Grants Program could help with qualifying expenses such as overdue rent or utilities, medical costs, groceries, transportation, or certain essential items.

    Fall 2026 applications are currently being reviewed on a rolling basis, and funding is limited.

    You’ll need to meet CCNY’s eligibility requirements and submit all requested documentation with your application. Students without an established GPA aren’t eligible yet and must wait until the following semester.
