Going back to school as an adult can feel impossible when money’s tight. Missouri’s Fast Track Workforce Incentive Grant was built for exactly this situation. It can cover your tuition and fees for a program that leads to a real job, and you won’t have to pay it back.
What Is the Fast Track Workforce Incentive Grant?
Fast Track is a Missouri grant that helps adults pay for school or an apprenticeship in a field that’s currently in high demand. It covers tuition and fees if you’re a student, or things like tools, books, and uniforms if you’re an apprentice.
Here’s the best part: this grant used to convert into a loan if you didn’t stay and work in Missouri for three years after finishing. That rule is gone now. You still have to report your job and address to the state for three years, but you won’t owe money back just for moving or changing jobs.
Who Is Eligible?
The rules vary depending on whether you want to become a student or an apprentice. Let’s break it down.
Everyone needs to meet these requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Be a Missouri resident, an active duty military member stationed in Missouri, or the spouse of one.
- Have a household adjusted gross income (from your most recent Missouri or federal tax return) of $80,000 or less if you file married filing jointly, or $40,000 or less for any other filing status.
- Not already have a bachelor’s degree.
- File a FAFSA, if your school needs one to calculate your award.
- Be at least 25 years old, or not have been enrolled in any school (high school or college) in the last two years.
- If you’re a Missouri resident, have lived in the state for at least two years before getting the grant.
- Enroll at least half-time in an eligible program.
- Be at least 25 years old, or not have been enrolled in a postsecondary program in the last two years (unless that program relates to your current apprenticeship).
- Be a Missouri resident. There’s no two-year wait for apprentices like there is for students.
- Be formally participating in an apprenticeship approved by the U.S. Department of Labor.
If you’ve received Fast Track before and want to renew it, you’ll also need a 2.5 GPA or better and steady progress toward finishing your program.
How Much Can I Get?
Fast Track is designed to fill the gap left over after your other financial aid. If you’re attending a public two- or four-year school, the goal is to cover your tuition and fees completely once combined with other grants. If your other aid already covers tuition and fees in full, you can still get up to $500 toward books, supplies, housing, or transportation.
If you’re attending a private school, your award is capped at what a comparable public school would charge. For the 2025–2026 award year, that’s up to $597.60 per credit hour (or $15.94 per clock hour) at four-year private schools, and up to $435.00 per credit hour (or $11.60 per clock hour) at two-year private schools, plus a separate fee allowance.
How Long Can I Keep Getting the Grant?
Your eligibility runs out whichever of these happens first:
- You’ve received the grant for four semesters (60 credit hours or 1,800 clock hours), or up to 48 months if you’re an apprentice.
- You earn a bachelor’s degree.
- You reach 200% of the normal time it takes to finish your program.
How Do I Apply?
You’ll apply through Missouri’s State Financial Aid Portal. Here’s how:
- Create an account or log in to the State Financial Aid Portal.
- Click “Estimate Eligibility” in the top menu.
- Choose the correct academic year from the dropdown.
- Find the Fast Track Workforce Incentive Grant row and click “Apply.”
You’ll need to upload a copy of your most recent Missouri 1040 tax return, so have that ready before you start.
Before you apply, check whether your school or apprenticeship program is on Missouri’s list of eligible institutions and programs. Not every school participates, so it’s worth confirming first.
