If you’re renting in Atlanta and struggling to keep up with your bills, imagine what a year without rent payments could mean for your family.
A nonprofit called FreeRent is offering eligible Atlanta households the opportunity to receive up to 12 months of rent assistance, along with financial coaching and support to help them build savings.
The eligibility screening for the 2027 program is open now, but only until October 12, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
The application process is competitive, and completing the screening doesn’t guarantee assistance. But if you meet the requirements, this could be an opportunity worth exploring before the deadline.
Here’s what you need to know.
What Is the FreeRent Atlanta Grant?
The FreeRent Atlanta Grant is a nonprofit program designed to help eligible working families in Atlanta gain financial stability.
Selected participants may receive rent assistance for up to 12 months, with the first payments expected to begin in February 2027.
The program also provides support beyond rent payments, including:
- Financial coaching.
- Regular check-ins and goal-setting.
- Help developing savings habits.
- Community connections and support.
One of the program’s goals is to help participants work toward saving at least three months’ worth of rent.
The organization doesn’t publish one fixed maximum dollar amount for the grant. Instead, the potential assistance is based on up to 12 months of rent for approved participants.
Because the program serves a limited number of households, meeting the eligibility requirements doesn’t guarantee selection.
Who Is Eligible?
FreeRent is looking for working households in Atlanta that have experienced a recent, unexpected financial hardship.
To qualify for consideration, applicants generally must meet all of the following requirements:
- Live within Atlanta city limits: You must have an active lease for a rental property located in the City of Atlanta. Living elsewhere in Fulton County doesn’t automatically qualify.
- Meet the income requirements: Your household income must fall between 50% and 80% of the Atlanta Area Median Income (AMI).
- Meet the employment requirement: At least one adult in your household must have worked full-time for at least one year.
- Meet the rent guideline: Your monthly rent should be approximately $2,000 or less.
- Meet the housing cost limit: Your rent and utilities combined must not exceed 50% of your monthly household income.
- Have experienced a recent hardship: This may include an unexpected medical expense, family emergency, natural disaster, or another qualifying financial setback.
- Commit to participating: Selected households must be willing to take part in financial coaching, check-ins, savings goals, and other program activities.
These requirements are used to determine whether you may move forward in the selection process.
Important: Passing the initial eligibility screening doesn’t guarantee an invitation to complete the full application, and submitting a full application doesn’t guarantee a place in the program.
How Much Rent Assistance Could You Receive?
Selected households may receive assistance covering up to 12 months of rent.
FreeRent doesn’t list a single fixed maximum award amount because rental costs vary between participating households.
For example, a household paying $1,500 per month could potentially receive assistance worth up to $18,000 over 12 months if approved for the full year at that rental amount.
That’s an illustration, not a guaranteed award.
The program also includes financial coaching intended to help families build savings, reduce financial stress, and work toward longer-term goals.
When Is the Application Deadline?
The first step is an eligibility screening, and that window is very short.
Here are the key dates for the 2027 cohort:
| Date | What Happens |
|---|---|
| September 30, 2026 | Information session held; a recording is available |
| October 5, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. ET | Eligibility screening opened |
| October 12, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET | Eligibility screening closes |
| December 2026 | Selection decisions expected |
| January 2027 | Mandatory orientation for selected participants |
| February 2027 | First rent payments expected to begin |
As of October 10, 2026, the screening window is still open.
Don’t wait until the last minute. October 12 is the deadline to complete the initial eligibility screening, not necessarily the deadline for invited applicants to finish the full application.
How Do You Apply?
FreeRent uses a multistep application process.
You must first complete the eligibility screening before you can be considered for the full application.
Step 1: Visit the Official Program Page
Go to the FreeRent Atlanta Grant page.
Look for the Apply Now button, which directs applicants to FreeRent’s grant application portal:
Make sure you’re using the official program website before providing personal information.
Step 2: Complete the Eligibility Screening
The initial screening checks whether your household meets the program’s basic requirements.
This includes factors such as your address, income, employment, rent expenses, and recent hardship.
The screening must be completed by October 12, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET.
Step 3: Watch for an Invitation Email
Applicants who pass the initial screening may receive an email invitation to complete the full application.
FreeRent says official invitation emails will come from an @freerent.org email address.
Not everyone who completes the screening will receive an invitation.
Step 4: Prepare Your Documents
FreeRent lists several items that applicants may need during the full application process.
These include:
- Government-issued photo identification.
- A copy of your current lease.
- A rent ledger showing your payment history.
- Proof of household income.
- Documentation of your recent hardship.
- A short, 90-second video introducing yourself and explaining your goals.
You may not need to upload every document during the initial eligibility screening, but preparing them ahead of time could make the next steps easier if you’re invited to apply.
Step 5: Complete the Additional Screening Steps
Applicants who advance may be asked to participate in:
- Interviews.
- Employment verification.
- A soft credit check.
- A background check.
FreeRent uses these steps as part of its selection process.
If you’re selected, you’ll also need to participate in the mandatory orientation scheduled for January 2027.
Can You Nominate Someone Else?
FreeRent has also provided information about nominating another household for consideration.
If you know an Atlanta renter who may qualify, review the nomination information on the official program website.
A nomination doesn’t guarantee eligibility, an application invitation, or selection.
Is FreeRent a Legitimate Organization?
FreeRent is an established Atlanta nonprofit that has received coverage from several news organizations.
Its rental assistance work has been reported by Black Enterprise and SaportaReport.
The organization is also listed in the Atlanta BeltLine’s resident support provider directory.
However, applicants should still take precautions when sharing financial information.
Use the official freerent.org website and verify that communications come from legitimate FreeRent contacts.
You can also contact the organization directly at ATL@freerent.org if you have questions about the application process.
What If You Need Rent Help Right Now?
Although FreeRent’s 2027 program could provide substantial assistance, selected participants aren’t expected to receive their first rent payments until February 2027.
That means this program may not be a solution for someone facing an immediate eviction or an overdue rent payment this month.

You may find other local organizations or assistance programs that can help with current housing expenses.
