Like I said, finding legit grants for single moms and dads can be difficult… but it’s not impossible. One important thing you need to remember is that it’s easier to find real grants for specific needs than it is to find someone who will just give you cash with no strings attached. Most real grant programs provide financial assistance with specific needs.

    Legit Grants for Single Moms

Every month, Emma Johnson at Wealthy Single Mommy provides $500 to one single mom who needs it. This cash grant does not have any strings attached, and is just designed to help someone get through some tough times. Learn more on her website, wealthysinglemommy.com, and then click “about” and then “grant.”

    Pell Grants & Scholarships

The Pell Grant is a federal grant that can help cover college expenses for single parents. In addition, many colleges and organizations offer scholarships specifically for single moms and dads. These education grants can help with tuition, school books, and sometimes even child care. For a list of over 50 scholarships for single parents, check out this list.

    Down Payment Grants

Buying a home can be difficult, especially when you’re trying to do it with only one income. Fortunately, there are many low income homebuyer programs and down-payment assistance programs that help single moms and dads buy homes. Some of these programs provide $25,000 or more toward your down payment!

    Home Repair Grants

Own your own home but can’t afford to fix it? Home repair grants can help low income homeowners with necessary repairs. For a list of home repair grants in every state, click here.

    TANF and Diversion Cash Assistance

TANF, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, is a government program that provides cash to low income families. You could receive a monthly grant for up to 60 months – that’s 5 years of assistance!

Diversion Cash Assistance is another type of grant that is used to help support single moms and dads who are experiencing a short-term financial crisis. These grants are usually only available for 1-3 months, but they often offer higher amounts than traditional TANF services.

    Food Stamps

Food Stamps, also known as The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, provides monthly money that can be used to purchase groceries for your family. In 2021, a single mom with two kids could receive up to $535 per month!

Oh, and if you get food stamps, don’t forget to check out our list of almost 1,000 freebies and deals you can get with your EBT card! Get the full list at LowIncomeRelief.com/EBT!

      1. Hello, my partner/hubby died unexpectedly about 2 months ago. He was on social security disability most of his life, so therefore didn’t have enough credits for my 17 year old to get survivors benefits, yet they had been taking some money from every check because they say he mad to much and or was paid too much at some point when he did some seasonal work. Think I should appeal their decision??? Also shortly before his passing the transmission went out in my car, and I’m really scared about busing during the winter here in Minnesota, our winters can be brutal. It takes 30 minutes or less to drive to my job, but it takes 2 buses and an hour and a half to get there by bus. I’m a real simple down to earth kinda mom, and so I’m not looking for anything fancy, just some rust bucket that is trusty. I’ve always drove “Hoopties” my whole life, so any car will do. I’m left with 2 teen boys to feed and just 1 income, and my local agencies are near impossible to connect with. For 2 weeks they told me they were overwhelmed with calls, so try your call at a later time, haha… Hope it’s not an emergency!!! Then finally after 2 weeks, I was finally given the privilege of leaving a message and someone would return my call in 2 business days, yeah right!!! 2 weeks later I call again, and to my amazement about a half an hour later I get a call, I’m like wow that was quick. She was a little confused, she said quick?? And then I realized what was going on, and said well I guess that would depend on which message you are returning, of course the 1 from 2 weeks ago. So this woman was so nice and polite and seem to know all the ones and outs, as if she herself were on assistance. She gave me some excellent advice and was supposed to email me the employment verification form along with some other form. So I waited till the next day to go to the library to print it up, and of course there was no mail from the county with attachments. I am ready to give up!!! Throw in the towel!!! I can’t seem to even get food help, it’s quite unlikely that I will get any help getting a car, but I may lose my job over it. My boss has already insinuated that she may let me go, as I am a PCA and am required to bring my clients to appointments or run errands for them. If she fires me I’m going to just end it all!!! I’m too old for this stress, and hard labor. I’m 56 years old and have always lived a pretty rough life, but this really takes the cake. And as if things weren’t bad enough, my step daughter stole $50 my sister gave me to help out, and she keeps denying it, but my son said she was the only one in my room when I was gone to work!!! Who does that!!! Just going in my room when I’m off slaving is disrespectful as heck, but to steal too!!! Some people have no morals!!! So now I have major trust issues with everyone!!! Please, any help you may be able to direct me to would be greatly appreciated. Thank you & God Bless!!!💜💜💜

Hi. If you contact the Financial Aid office at the college you would like to attend, they should be able to offer information on grants and scholarships that you may qualify for.

I am a single mom of 3 boys with no financial help. We have recently relocated to Paducah Ky, living in a hotel at the moment can not afford first months rent or deposit and my car has decided to quit. I am a travel CNA and its hard to pick up shifts if I dont have a reliable vehicle. I have been all over the internet looking for hardship applications and keep hitting brick walls.

Hi Tasha. Reach out to your local university or community college. Their financial aid department will be able to tell you what grants are available and if you qualify for them.
