Child Care Assistance

Child care is expensive – and it can easily consume a single parent’s budget. In the United States, every single state receives money from the federal government that is designed to help pay for state-run child care subsidies. These subsidies help single moms and dads who are low income pay for child care so that they can work or attend school. Each state sets their own rules and requirements, so contact your State’s Department of Human Services for more information.

TANF

TANF, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, is a government program that provides cash to low income families. Although this program is funded by grants from the federal government, each state can decide how they run their programs.

Generally, in order to be eligible for TANF cash, you must be unemployed or underemployed, meet certain income limits and have a child 18 years old or younger. You will need to apply with your state office in charge of assistance programs.

Food Stamps

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, provides monthly money to help you purchase food for your family. The amount of money you receive depends on your household size and income. For example, a single mom with two kids could receive up to $535 per month in 2021!

Oh, and if you get food stamps, don’t forget to check out our list of 600+ freebies and deals you can get with your EBT card! Get the full list at LowIncomeRelief.com/EBT!

WIC

If you are pregnant or have children under the age of 5, then WIC may provide extra food benefits for your family. This program, formally called The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, provides special food benefits to pregnant women, infants and children under the age of 5. Instead of simply giving you a flat amount of money to purchase food with, WIC provides specific nutritious foods such as infant formula, milk, cheese, whole wheat bread, peanut butter, eggs, fruits and vegetables. WIC offices can usually be found in county health departments, hospitals, schools, public housing sites and community centers.

Medicaid

Medicaid can help single moms and dads with health care expenses! Although  Medicaid has been expanded to cover all low income people in many states, the program covers low income children in all states. This program can provide health care and medications completely free to families who qualify.

Section 8

Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers can help you save money on housing! These vouchers provide a subsidy on your rent, which means that the government pays a portion of your rent. That reduces the amount that you owe, which can help you afford housing when you are low income.

The wait lists are notoriously long, but this program does offer help for single moms and dads who are able to get it. In fact, in some areas, Section 8 will even help you buy a house! We’ve got details on that at LowIncomeRelief.com.

LIHEAP and Weatherization

If you have housing, LIHEAP and Weatherization Programs offer help for single moms and dads! You can save money on utilities. The LIHEAP program can pay hundreds of dollars toward your utility bills, reducing the amount you owe and keeping your utilities connected if you’re being threatened with disconnection. Weatherization Services can help you reduce your utility bills as well. When we received help from Weatherization Services, we received over $18,000 in free home improvements! Our power bills dropped from $600 per month to $150 per month. It was a lifesaver.
