Property taxes have been climbing across North Carolina, and Guilford County homeowners have definitely felt it. If you live in Greensboro, High Point, or anywhere else in the county, there’s a new grant that could put money back in your pocket.
It’s called the Low Income Homeowner Assistance Grant. Here’s what it covers, who can get it, and how to apply before funds run out.
What Is This Grant?
Guilford County created this grant to help homeowners deal with rising property tax bills. It’s a one-time payment, sent directly to you, not applied to your tax bill. That means the grant has no effect on your requirement to pay your property taxes in full.
The program launched in 2026, and it’s funded until the money runs out. Applications are reviewed in the order they’re received, so applying early gives you a better shot.
Who Is Eligible?
You’ll need to check off every item on this list:
- The home is your primary residence
- The home is located in Guilford County
- You’re the person who paid the property taxes on the home
- You’ve owned the home for five continuous years
- Your home’s total property tax value was $250,000 or less for the 2025 tax year
- You have no outstanding liens, assessments, or delinquent taxes owed to Guilford County
- You did not already receive help from a Guilford County tax assistance program on your 2025 tax bill
- Your household income is at or below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) for your household size
That last one trips people up because AMI limits change depending on how many people live in your home. If you want to understand how AMI works and see where your income falls, check our guide on Area Median Income.
Guilford County also has a free eligibility quiz you can take before you apply. It only takes a few minutes and can tell you if you’re likely to qualify.
How Much Money Can I Get?
Your grant amount is based on how much your Guilford County property taxes went up between 2021 and 2025. Specifically, it’s the difference between what you paid in 2021 and what you were billed on July 1, 2025.
Every approved household gets at least $50, even if the math works out to less than that.
How Do I Apply?
The application window is split into two parts:
- July 15 to August 15, 2026: Only homeowners 65 and older could apply during this period.
- August 16 to October 31, 2026: All qualifying homeowners can apply now, regardless of age.
If you’re not 65 or older and you tried to apply before August 16, your application would have been denied. You’ll need to submit it again during the current window.
To apply online, just use the online application portal. If you want to use a paper application, you’ll need to visit the county office to pick one up. You can also reach out to the county at their dedicated email or phone number line.
What If I Don’t Qualify (or I Live Outside Guilford County)?
This program is only for Guilford County homeowners, but North Carolina offers statewide property tax relief too, including programs for seniors and people with disabilities. Our guide to property tax relief programs breaks down what’s available across the state, so it’s worth a look even if this specific grant isn’t a fit.
Relief Recap
Rising property taxes shouldn’t force anyone out of a home they’ve paid into for years. Guilford County built this grant to ease that pressure, and it’s worth ten minutes of your time to check the eligibility quiz and apply. Funds go fast once the full application window opens, so don’t wait until October. For more North Carolina resources, visit our North Carolina area page.
