Summers in California’s Imperial and Coachella valleys can be brutally hot, and keeping the air conditioning running can make electric bills difficult to manage.
If you’re 60 or older and live in Imperial Irrigation District’s (IID) service area, you may qualify for a 30% discount on your electric bill.
IID offers this discount through its READY program. There’s also another program called SHIELD for older customers with high medical expenses.
Here’s how both programs work and how to apply.
How Much Can You Save With READY?
IID’s Residential Energy Assistance Designed for You (READY) program helps income-qualified customers lower their electric bills.
Eligible customers receive:
- 30% off their electric bill if they’re 60 or older.
- 20% off their electric bill if they’re younger than 60.
The senior discount previously started at age 62, but IID lowered the minimum age to 60 to help more older customers qualify.
That means a qualifying senior with a $200 electric bill could save approximately $60 through the 30% discount.
READY replaced IID’s older Residential Energy Assistance Program (REAP), so you may still hear the program mentioned by its former name.
You can learn more through IID’s official website.
Who Qualifies for READY?
To qualify, you generally must:
- Be an IID residential electric customer.
- Live in a primary residence within IID’s service area.
- Meet the program’s household income requirements.
- Be at least 60 years old to receive the higher 30% discount.
Younger customers who meet the requirements may qualify for the 20% discount.
READY Income Limits for 2026
IID publishes the following maximum annual household income limits:
| Household Size | Maximum Annual Income |
|---|---|
| 1–2 people | $52,300 |
| 3 people | $63,300 |
| 4 people | $74,300 |
| 5 people | $85,300 |
| Each additional person | Add $11,000 |
These limits took effect January 1, 2026.
If you’re close to the income limit, contact IID to confirm how your household income will be calculated.
What Is the SHIELD Program?
IID also offers the Senior Health & Income Energy Lifeline Discount (SHIELD) program.
SHIELD is designed for older customers who face unusually high medical expenses.
Eligible customers may receive a 30% monthly electric bill discount if they:
- Are 60 years old or older.
- Meet SHIELD’s household income requirements.
- Have medical and prescription expenses that exceed 10% of their annual income.
- Meet IID’s other program requirements.
SHIELD Income Limits for 2026
SHIELD has different income limits from READY.
| Household Size | Maximum Annual Income |
|---|---|
| 1–2 people | $68,103 |
| 3–4 people | $103,523 |
| Each additional person | Add $17,710 |
These limits took effect January 1, 2026.
SHIELD may be particularly helpful for seniors whose income is too high for READY but who spend a significant portion of their income on medical care or prescription medications.
Important: You cannot receive READY and SHIELD discounts at the same time.
If you’re 60 or older and have high medical expenses, ask IID which program is the better fit for your household.
You can find information about both programs on IID’s website.
How Often Do You Have to Reapply?
IID has updated its renewal requirements.
- READY customers age 60 or older: Reapply every three years.
- READY customers younger than 60: Reapply annually.
- SHIELD customers: Reapply every three years.
These are the current renewal schedules, replacing older information that said senior customers had to reapply every two years.
Be sure to respond to renewal notices so you don’t accidentally lose your discount.
How Do You Apply?
You can start by visiting Imperial Irrigation District’s website and looking for its payment assistance programs.
You can also contact an IID customer service center for help with the application process.
For READY, applicants should be prepared to provide documentation such as:
- Proof of household income.
- Recent income records or tax documents.
- Identification and other information requested by IID.
If you’re applying for SHIELD, ask what documentation is needed to verify your medical and prescription expenses.
Before submitting your application, confirm the current requirements and make sure you’re applying for the program that best fits your circumstances.
What If You Need More Help With Your Electric Bill?
IID also offers other customer assistance programs, including Customer Assistance for Residential Emergencies (CARE).
CARE is separate from READY and SHIELD and may provide additional options for eligible customers facing an emergency.
If you’re struggling to pay your bill, contact IID to ask about available assistance and payment arrangements.
You can also explore utility assistance programs to learn about other resources that may help.
Relief Recap
If you’re an Imperial Irrigation District customer age 60 or older, you may qualify for a 30% electric bill discount through READY.
IID also offers SHIELD, which provides a 30% discount to eligible seniors whose medical and prescription expenses exceed 10% of their annual income.
The programs have different income limits, and you cannot receive both discounts at the same time.
If you live in IID’s service area, check the current requirements and ask which program you may qualify for.
A 30% discount could make a meaningful difference, especially during California’s hottest months.
