Kids Skate Free: A Parent’s Guide to Free Summer Fun

Summer is the perfect time for kids to lace up their skates and hit the rink! And thanks to Kids Skate Free, it can be budget-friendly too. This nationwide program offers free or discounted skating sessions for kids at participating roller skating rinks.

About Kids Skate Free

Kids Skate Free is the very similar to Kids Bowl Free but instead of bowling, this program offers free access to skating rinks throughout the summer!

It’s a little complicated because each participating skating center sets their own requirements. Children can usually participate if they are under 14 years old, but some rinks set the age limits as high as 18 and others set them as low as 8 years old. It just depends on your local skating rink’s policies.

How to Sign Up

It’s more complicated to sign up than it used to be. In previous years, you just had to visit the website and register for free. Now, you’re required to purchase a $4.99 annual membership to Kids Skate Free before you can register for the program.

Now, $4.99 may not sound like a lot but it can be hard for low income families to afford. Before you take the steps to register, visit their location page. Make sure there’s a participating rink in your area. Read the details carefully so you can be confident that your child is eligible.

Watch out for any indication that the rink isn’t actively participating passes. As of this writing, I can see participating rinks in Illinois that are listed as participating but the details say they aren’t accepting passes right now. You can also call the rink to verify that you’ll be able to use these passes.

Please don’t pay for that $4.99 annual membership unless you are sure that you’ll be able to participate in this program. Make sure to read the terms and conditions carefully.

How to Maximize Your Kids Skate Free Benefits

Kids Skate Free is an amazing opportunity to enjoy hours of fun without spending a fortune. But did you know you can take it a step further and save even more? Here are some tips to get the most out of your skating experience.

  • BYOS (Bring Your Own Skates): Most rinks charge a rental fee for skates, so if you have your own, you can save a bundle. Check thrift stores for affordable skates that will fit your children.
  • Pack Snacks and Drinks: Concession stand prices can add up quickly. Pack a cooler with drinks and snacks to keep everyone fueled and hydrated without emptying your wallet. Even if you can’t bring it inside, you can always step out to your car for a quick refresher.
  • Go During Off-Peak Hours: You may enjoy skating during off-peak hours because the rink will be less crowded.

Make sure that you read the terms and conditions of this program. You usually can’t use Kids Skate Free coupons if you’re attending a birthday party or other celebration. You can’t stack it with other admission offers, either.

You may also be able to check out free museum passes from your local library or score some sweet EBT discounts. There are state parks and national parks discounts you may qualify for as well.
