You can find several rental assistance programs that serve the entire state of Maryland. But don’t forget to keep reading for even more help!

Emergency Rental Assistance Program

Maryland’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) is a federally funded program offered through the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. This rental assistance program is for individuals and families who have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

What does Maryland’s ERAP cover?

Maryland’s ERAP helps renters across the state to avoid eviction, maintain secure housing, and find a place to live if they are homeless. If you are eligible, the program may cover current or past due payments incurred during the pandemic.

Who is eligible for Maryland’s ERAP?

Maryland’s ERAP is operated independently by local jurisdictions, so eligibility requirements may vary. However, generally you must:

  • Be a renter living in Maryland.
  • Have experienced financial hardship due to the pandemic.
  • Meet certain income requirements.

How do I apply?

You will need to apply directly to your local jurisdiction’s ERAP. Note that some of these may not be currently accepting new applicants, but this could change as more funds become available.

Jurisdictions operating their own ERAP include:

Assisted Housing Relief Program

Families with children under age 21, as well as expectant mothers, may be able to receive rent payment assistance through Emergency Assistance to Families with Children (EAFC). This program can also assist with foreclosures, utilities, disaster relief, and burial expenses.

Who is eligible for EAFC?

In order to be eligible for this program, you must:

  • Be a Maryland resident.
  • Have at least one child under 21 living with them, or currently be pregnant.
  • Provide proof of an emergency that wasn’t caused by a family member quitting employment.
  • Have an eviction notice, utility shut-off notice, or other proof of a financial emergency.

How do I apply?

Contact your local Department of Human Services office for more information and to apply for assistance. Assistance is dependent upon available funds.
