Freelance and literary writing rarely comes with much of a financial safety net. When an unexpected emergency creates a short-term financial crisis, PEN America has a program specifically designed to help professional writers.
The U.S. Writers Aid Initiative, part of the PEN America Writers Emergency Fund, provides one-time grants to eligible writers experiencing acute financial need.
The current fall application window is open through October 5, 2026.
What the Fund Offers
The U.S. Writers Aid Initiative provides one-time financial assistance to professional writers facing a short-term financial emergency.
PEN America does not publish a standard grant amount or maximum award. Funding is limited, and assistance is based on the circumstances of each applicant.
The fund is intended to address emergency financial needs rather than expenses associated with completing or promoting a writing project.
It does not fund writing-related expenses such as:
- Residencies
- Sabbaticals
- Computers
- Printing
- Shipping
- Travel
- Publicity services
You do not need to be a PEN America member to apply. Writers who receive assistance also receive a complimentary one-year PEN America membership.
Who Qualifies
The program is for professional writers based in the United States. This can include fiction and nonfiction writers, poets, playwrights, screenwriters, translators and journalists.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate professional writing credentials. Examples include:
- Publication of one or more books
- Multiple essays, stories or poems published in literary journals or anthologies within the past two years
- A full-length play produced by a professional theater company
- Work as a full-time professional journalist, columnist or critic
- A consistent freelance publication record across multiple outlets within the past two years
- A contracted forthcoming publication
- Other professional credentials that demonstrate your work as a writer
Writers who are only self-published or published by a press that charges for publication are not eligible.
Writers who are currently enrolled in a degree-granting program are also ineligible.
Can You Apply Again?
PEN America asks previous applicants to wait three years before reapplying, whether or not they received funding from their earlier application.
There is also a lifetime limit on assistance. If you’ve already received two Writers Aid Grants, you aren’t eligible for additional funding through the program.
How to Apply
Applications are submitted through PEN America’s online Submittable portal.
For 2026, the published application windows are:
- Spring: March 15–31
- Summer: June 1–15
- Fall: September 15–October 5
PEN America notes that these dates are subject to change.
For the current fall cycle, applications are open now and close October 5, 2026.
If you’re selected as a finalist, PEN America will ask you to provide supporting documentation before funds can be released.
Because the fund has limited resources, meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee that you’ll receive assistance.
