If you need help with a vehicle in Frederick County, Maryland, then you should check out Second Chances Garage! This organization provides low cost vehicles and low cost car repair to people who need a little extra help.
What is Second Chances Garage?
Second Chances Garage has awarded over 425 vehicles to people in the Frederick County area. They work with a variety of partner agencies, including the United Way, Just Serve, and the Boys and Girls Club of Frederick County to identify low income people who need help with transportation.
What Do They Do?
Second Chances Garage has two main services that they offer.
- Reduced-Cost Repairs Program provides low cost car repairs to those who qualify. They estimate that they only charge about half the cost of other full-service garages. Check their list of services.
- Low-Cost Vehicle Program provides a low cost vehicle. It costs $1,000 to submit the application ($590 program fee, $410 for title, tags and registration). Please be aware that it can take several months before a donated vehicle is received. (This is why I prefer the other free car programs we’ve found)
Who is Eligible for Reduced-Price Repairs?
In order to be eligible for the repairs, you just need to meet the following:
- You must be receiving assistance or services from another agency. SNAP, TANF, Medicaid and SSI all qualify.
- You must have a household income that falls under their income guidelines.
Who is Eligible for a Low Cost Vehicle?
In order to be eligible for these programs, you must be receiving ongoing support from one of their partner agencies (or have recently graduated from one of their programs). You will need a referral from that organization in order to get started with Second Chances Garage.
In addition to meeting the requirements of the partner agency, you will also need to meet the following:

How Do I Apply?
To get help with auto repair, you simply need to be able to bring your vehicle into the shop in Frederick, Maryland. You cannot tow it to the facility without calling first. There is a $25 fee for evaluations, which will be reduced from your invoice if you get the work done within the next 30 days.
