Christmas morning matters to kids. When money is tight, it can feel like a lot of pressure.
Toys for Tots is one of the biggest free toy programs in the country. It’s run through the Marine Corps Reserve with support from the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, and it provides new toys to children in families who are struggling.
The trick is knowing how your local campaign works. Here’s what to expect, so you can sign up before the list fills up.
What Is Toys for Tots?
Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys from the public every fall. Then it distributes those toys to children in need before Christmas.
It’s bigger than most people realize. Local campaigns operate in more than 800 communities across all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation supports the national program, while local campaigns are coordinated by Marines, Marine Corps League members, or other authorized volunteers.
That’s why the rules can feel different from town to town. Each campaign sets its own sign-up process, eligibility requirements, and dates.
Although Toys for Tots operates nationwide, that doesn’t mean every county has its own campaign. You’ll need to find the campaign that serves your community.
Who Can Get Toys?
Toys for Tots helps children whose families cannot afford Christmas gifts. Most campaigns consider a family’s financial situation, but each location establishes its own eligibility requirements.
Here’s what to know:
- Age: Most campaigns serve children ages 12 and under, but some accept older children. Depending on the location, the age limit may extend to 14, 17, or another age.
- Where you live: You’ll generally need to apply through the campaign serving your county or community. Some campaigns require proof that you live in their service area.
- Income: Some campaigns ask for income information or proof of financial need. Others use referrals from schools, churches, or community organizations.
- Multiple requests: Some campaigns limit families to one application per household or restrict requests through multiple organizations.
Because these rules vary, don’t assume your family is ineligible based on what another county requires.
Check your local campaign’s instructions before applying.
When Does Sign-Up Open?
Many Toys for Tots campaigns begin accepting requests in October and close registration sometime in November or early December.
Toys are generally distributed in December, before Christmas.
However, there is no single national application deadline.
For example, the Twin Cities campaign in Minnesota asks families to register through a local nonprofit organization by November 30, 2026. That campaign does not distribute toys directly to individual families.
Other campaigns may have earlier deadlines or stop accepting applications once they reach capacity.
Don’t wait until December to check. Even if your local campaign hasn’t opened registration yet, you can find its website and look for instructions about when applications begin.
How Do I Request Toys?
Start on the official Toys for Tots Request a Toy page.
Select your state and then find the local campaign serving your county or community.
From there, you’ll generally encounter one of two systems.
1. Apply Directly Through Your Local Campaign
Some campaigns accept applications from families through an online request form.
Depending on the location, you may need to provide:
- Your name and contact information
- Your address or county of residence
- Each child’s name and age
- Information about your household or financial situation
- Other details requested by the campaign
Some forms may also ask about children’s interests or clothing sizes.
Follow the instructions carefully and submit your application before the local deadline.
2. Apply Through a Partner Organization
Other campaigns don’t accept requests directly from individual families.
Instead, they distribute toys through organizations such as:
- Churches
- Schools
- Food pantries
- Community nonprofits
- Family resource centers
These organizations help identify eligible families and coordinate toy distribution.
If your local campaign uses this system, check its website for participating organizations and contact one to ask about registration.
School counselors and family resource centers may also be able to point you toward a participating organization.
Applying through a partner doesn’t necessarily mean you’re guaranteed toys. Availability depends on the campaign, the organization, and the donations received.
What Documents Should You Have Ready?
Some Toys for Tots campaigns require documents when you apply or pick up your toys.
Depending on the location, these may include:
- A photo ID for the parent or guardian
- Proof of your current address
- Documents confirming your children’s ages
- Proof of income or financial need
- Your registration confirmation or pickup notice
Not every campaign requires all these documents.
Check your local instructions before gathering paperwork or traveling to a distribution location.
If you’re missing something, ask the campaign or partner organization whether another document can be accepted.
What Should I Watch Out For?
A few small details can make the process easier.
Check your email and text messages. Some campaigns send registration confirmations, requests for additional information, or pickup instructions electronically. Remember to check your spam folder.
Make sure your children’s information is accurate. Toys are often selected or sorted by age group. Incorrect ages could affect which gifts are available.
Follow the pickup instructions. Some campaigns assign specific pickup dates, times, or locations. You may need to bring identification or your registration confirmation.
Don’t assume you can walk in without registering. Some campaigns require advance approval and do not offer walk-in distribution.
Keep the surprise if you can. If your campaign allows it, consider leaving the children at home during pickup so they won’t see their Christmas gifts early.
Most importantly, remember that registering doesn’t guarantee you’ll receive toys. Each campaign works with the donations and resources available in its community.
What If I Missed the Deadline?
It happens, especially when you’re juggling bills, work, and everything else that comes with the holidays.
If your local campaign has closed registration, you can still ask whether any partner organizations are accepting families or maintaining a waiting list.

Some programs have different deadlines, so it’s worth checking even if Toys for Tots is no longer accepting requests in your area.
Relief Recap
Toys for Tots provides free Christmas toys to children in families who need help, with local campaigns operating in communities across the country.
Most campaigns serve children ages 12 and under, although some accept older kids. Application dates, income requirements, documents, and pickup procedures vary by location.
The most important step is to visit the official Toys for Tots Request a Toy page and find the campaign serving your community. Check whether it accepts applications directly or requires you to register through a partner organization.
Apply as early as you can because deadlines and toy availability are limited.
