    What is Working Wheels?

Working Wheels is a nonprofit organization that provides low-cost cars and vehicle repairs to eligible low income people who need help. These services are not free but they are significantly cheaper than they would be elsewhere.

    What Services Do They Provide?

This organization provides two critical services.

    • Vehicle Purchasing Program provides vehicles for the low cost of just $628.
    • Vehicle Repair Program provides low-cost vehicle repairs that cost just 10% of the regular price (not to exceed $100).

    Who is Eligible?

In order to be eligible for either service, you must be referred by a caseworker or a partner agency.

To be eligible to receive a car, you must have:

    • Valid North Carolina driver’s license
    • Proof of employment
    • Ability to pay $628

To be eligible to receive vehicle repairs, you must have:

    • A vehicle with a valid license plate
    • Ability to pay up to $100 for the repair
    • A qualifying circumstance which is one of the following:
      • Employment
      • School enrollment
      • Full-time caregiving responsibilities
      • Disability
      • Age 60+

    How Do I Apply?

In order to get help from this organization, you must be referred from one of their community partners. They have a list of community partners on their website. If you are working with an organization that is not listed here, you can also show them the Referral Partner Application if they are interested in working with Working Wheels in the future.

Their community partners can help you complete an application form. After the application is submitted, Working Wheels will reach out to you for a follow-up if you are selected.

    Relief Recap

Working Wheels is a great resource for low income people in Western North Carolina. If you need a low-cost vehicle or car repair, they may be able to help you as long as you are already receiving other services from one of their community partners.
