If you’re attending Austin Community College (ACC) in Texas, there may be help available.

ACC offers a Student Emergency Fund that provides short-term financial assistance to eligible students experiencing unexpected emergencies.

Depending on your enrollment, you may qualify for up to $1,000 in assistance during an academic year to help cover certain emergency expenses.

Here’s how the program works, what expenses may qualify, and how to request help.

What Is the ACC Student Emergency Fund?

The Austin Community College Student Emergency Fund is designed to help students facing unexpected financial emergencies that could interfere with their education.

The fund may help with certain essential expenses, including housing, transportation, healthcare, and academic needs.

For example, if your car suddenly needs repairs and you rely on it to get to class, the fund may be able to help with eligible repair costs.

However, this isn’t a general financial assistance program for everyday expenses. Students must demonstrate an unexpected emergency and provide documentation supporting their request.

Funding is limited, and assistance isn’t guaranteed.

    Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for the ACC Student Emergency Fund, you generally need to meet the program’s enrollment and emergency requirements.

    Eligible applicants include:

    • Students currently attending classes at Austin Community College.
    • Continuing Education students enrolled in eligible programs under Texas House Bill 8 (HB8).

Applicants must also be experiencing an unexpected financial emergency that affects their ability to continue their education.

You’ll need to provide documentation explaining the emergency and the expenses you’re requesting help with.

Important: Adult Education students are not eligible for this particular fund.

Students may apply for and receive assistance only once per semester.

Meeting the eligibility requirements does not automatically guarantee approval. ACC reviews requests based on individual circumstances and available funding.

How Much Money Can You Get?

The maximum amount depends on how many credit hours you’re taking.

    EnrollmentMaximum Assistance
6 credit hours or fewerUp to $500 per semester
7 credit hours or moreUp to $1,000 per semester

However, there’s an important annual limit.

Students may receive no more than $1,000 total across the fall, spring, and summer semesters of an academic year.

For example, if you receive $500 during the fall semester, you may have up to $500 remaining for another eligible emergency during the same academic year.

The actual amount awarded depends on your documented expenses, eligibility, and available funding.

What Expenses Can the Fund Cover?

The Student Emergency Fund may help with several types of unexpected expenses.

    Housing and Utility Expenses

    Eligible expenses may include:

These expenses must be connected to an eligible emergency rather than ordinary, ongoing financial needs.

    Healthcare Expenses

The fund may also help with certain healthcare costs, including:

    • Prescription medications
    • Vision correction
    • Emergency dental care
    • Other eligible healthcare expenses

However, the fund does not cover existing medical debt.

    Transportation Expenses

Transportation problems can make attending classes difficult, especially for students who depend on a vehicle to get to campus.

The fund may help with qualifying transportation expenses, including unexpected car repairs.

For example, if your vehicle breaks down and you need it to attend classes, you may be able to request assistance with the repair.

    Academic Technology and Materials

Students may also qualify for help with necessary academic technology or educational materials.

These expenses must meet the fund’s requirements and be connected to an eligible emergency.

    What Expenses Are Not Covered?

Not every financial need qualifies for assistance.

According to ACC, the Student Emergency Fund does not cover:

    • Tuition
    • Existing medical debt
    • Reimbursement for expenses you’ve already paid

That last restriction is especially important.

If you’re facing an unexpected expense, contact ACC before paying it yourself if you hope to receive assistance through this fund.

The program generally cannot reimburse you for costs you’ve already covered.

ACC may also determine that certain requests do not qualify under its emergency assistance guidelines.

    What Documents Do You Need?

Students must provide documentation supporting their emergency assistance request.

Depending on the situation, useful documents may include:

    • A rent or utility bill
    • A notice showing an urgent expense
    • A vehicle repair estimate
    • A medical or dental invoice
    • Other documentation showing the unexpected financial need

The documents should help ACC understand what happened, how much assistance you’re requesting, and why the expense is affecting your ability to stay in school.

A CARE Coordinator can explain what documentation is appropriate for your circumstances.

    How Do You Apply?

ACC uses its Student Care Center process to review emergency assistance requests.

    Here’s how to get started.

Step 1: Submit a Support Request

Visit the official ACC Student Emergency Fund page and follow the instructions to submit a support request through the Student Care Center portal.

Describe the emergency you’re experiencing and the assistance you need.

    Step 2: Check Your ACCmail

After submitting your request, watch your ACC student email account.

A CARE Coordinator will contact you to arrange an appointment.

Make sure to check your messages regularly so you don’t miss important information about your request.

Step 3: Meet With a CARE Coordinator

You’ll meet with a CARE Coordinator, either virtually or in person, to discuss your circumstances.

During the meeting, the coordinator may review your emergency, supporting documents, and available assistance options.

Students must also be willing to explore alternative resources when appropriate.

If your financial needs exceed the fund’s $1,000 annual maximum, the CARE Coordinator may be able to help you identify other sources of assistance.

Submitting a request does not guarantee that you’ll receive funding.

    When Can You Apply?

ACC states that Student Emergency Fund requests open after the 12th class day of a long semester.

The program is not available during intersession periods.

There is also no guarantee that applications will remain available until the end of a semester.

Because funding is limited, the fund may close early if available money runs out.

ACC has not published a single fixed application deadline that applies to every semester.

If you’re currently experiencing an emergency, check the official Student Emergency Fund page for the latest availability and application instructions.

You can also contact ACC to ask whether requests are being accepted for your current semester.

Will This Affect Your Financial Aid?

According to ACC, receiving assistance through the Student Emergency Fund does not change your financial aid package.

That may be reassuring if you’re already receiving financial aid and are worried that requesting emergency assistance could reduce your existing support.

However, you should still speak with ACC if you have questions about how a particular type of assistance applies to your situation.

What If Your Request Isn’t Approved?

Not every student who applies will receive funding.

The fund has limited resources, and ACC reviews each request individually.

If your request isn’t approved, or you need more assistance than the program can provide, ask your CARE Coordinator about other resources.

ACC may be able to connect you with additional campus or community assistance programs.

You can also explore other options for housing, food, transportation, and emergency financial assistance while you work toward staying enrolled.

    Relief Recap

A sudden financial emergency shouldn’t automatically mean giving up on your education.

If you’re attending Austin Community College and facing an unexpected expense, the ACC Student Emergency Fund may be able to help you stay on track.

Eligible students taking six or fewer credit hours may request up to $500 per semester, while students taking seven or more credit hours may request up to $1,000.

The overall limit is $1,000 per academic year, and assistance may be available for qualifying housing, healthcare, transportation, and academic expenses.

Applications generally open after the 12th class day of a long semester, but funding is limited and requests may close early.

If you need help, visit the ACC Student Emergency Fund page to review the requirements and submit a support request when applications are available.

Even if the fund can’t cover everything, speaking with a CARE Coordinator may help you find other resources to get through the emergency and continue your education.
