The COVID-19 pandemic has had many effects on our daily life throughout 2020 and 2021. Of the many changes that have occurred, one that is likely to be permanent is the move to conducting our daily lives online more than ever.
You may be aware that it is now possible to purchase groceries online using SNAP, but can you spend cash EBT online?
Yes! You can spend EBT cash online almost anywhere you can use SNAP online.
Shopping with EBT cash online
In 2020, the Food & Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture launched the Online Purchasing Pilot program, which helped retailers start accepting payments from EBT cards online.
The FNS Online Purchasing Pilot is currently operating in most U.S. states. However, if you live in Alaska, Louisiana, or Montana, you may not be able to use your EBT card online.
While grocery retailers in most states accept SNAP for online ordering, not all of them accept EBT cash. For example, many retailers partner with Instacart to process online orders, and they do not accept EBT cash. See below for a list of retailers that do not accept EBT cash.
Where can you spend cash EBT online?
Due to the new Purchasing Pilot program, many online grocery retailers now accept EBT payments. However, while participating retailers accept EBT SNAP, not all of them accept EBT cash. Here is a list of retailers that accept EBT cash payments online, for either curbside pickup, delivery, or both.
Keep in mind that even where retailers accept EBT cash online, some items are not eligible for purchase (i.e. alcohol, firearms, tobacco, etc.). Check out another one of our articles on EBT cash here.
Albertsons accepts both EBT cash and EBT SNAP payments online for curbside pickup orders in the following states:
California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Washington, Wyoming
Depending on where you live, you may be able to use your EBT cash to make purchases online for curbside pickup. Use their store locator to find the nearest location to you and contact them to find out whether you can place an order online with EBT cash.
FreshDirect accepts EBT cash, but there’s a catch. The program is currently only available in the Bronx (New York) in zip codes 10454 and 10455.
Hannaford accepts both EBT cash and EBT SNAP payments online for curbside pickup orders.
Hy-Vee accepts both EBT cash and EBT SNAP payments online for curbside pickup orders at nearly all of their locations. A list of all of EBT eligible locations is available here.
Albertsons accepts both EBT cash and EBT SNAP payments online for pickup orders in the following states:
Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, New Mexico, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, Washington, DC
If you live in one of the following states, you can use both EBT SNAP and EBT cash to place orders online for delivery and pickup.

Which retailers do not accept EBT cash online?
