Waiting for subsidized housing can take years, and rent doesn’t pause while you wait. CASH SJC is a new program from the Housing Authority of San Joaquin County and GiveDirectly that sends cash directly to eligible seniors who are currently on the Housing Authority waitlist.
If you’re selected, you could receive $1,000 per month for 12 months, with no restrictions on how you spend the money.
What CASH SJC Offers
CASH SJC stands for Cash Assistance for Senior Housing in San Joaquin County.
The program is a partnership between the Housing Authority of San Joaquin County and GiveDirectly, with funding from the California Department of Social Services.
Selected participants receive $1,000 every month for 12 months, or $12,000 total.
There are no restrictions on how you use the money. You can spend it on rent, food, medicine, bills or anything else you need. You don’t have to repay the money or report how you spent it.
Payments can be received by direct deposit or on a debit card provided by the program, so you don’t need a bank account to participate.
Who Qualifies?
You’ll need to meet all of these requirements:
- Be 60 years old or older
- Live in San Joaquin County
- Be on the Housing Authority of the County of San Joaquin waitlist
- Have household income at or below HACSJ’s applicable income limits
- Not currently receive money from another guaranteed income program

If you already receive CalFresh, SSI, CalWORKs or another qualifying public benefit, you don’t need to submit separate proof of income. Participation in one of those programs is enough to verify that requirement.

This Isn’t First-Come, First-Served
There’s one important thing to understand before applying.
CASH SJC expects to receive more eligible applications than it has available spots. If that happens, participants will be selected at random, like a lottery.
Everyone who applies and qualifies has an equal chance of being selected. Applying on the first day won’t give you better odds than applying later, as long as your application is submitted before the deadline.
There is still an advantage to applying early, though: it gives program staff more time to contact you and help resolve any missing documents or application problems.
Applicants who aren’t initially selected may also be placed on a CASH SJC backup list.
And importantly, applying for CASH SJC will not change your position on the Housing Authority waitlist. Whether you’re selected or not, your place on that housing waitlist stays the same.
How to Apply
There are three free ways to apply:
- Apply online at cashsjc.aidkit.org/apply.
- Apply by phone by calling 1-866-480-2769.
- Get application help by booking a free guided session through the CASH SJC appointment calendar.
You’ll generally need:
- Proof of identity, such as a driver’s license or state ID
- Proof that you live in San Joaquin County, such as a utility bill
- Proof of income, unless you already receive a qualifying public benefit
If you don’t have all of the requested documents, don’t automatically give up. The program specifically encourages applicants to call for help if they’re missing paperwork.
Phone support is available Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon, with assistance available in English and Spanish.
Important CASH SJC Dates
Applications opened August 24, 2026 and must be submitted by November 18, 2026. Late applications won’t be accepted.
Here’s the current timeline:
- August 24, 2026: Applications opened
- November 18, 2026: Application deadline
- December 9, 2026: Applicants are notified whether they were selected
- January 20, 2027: First payment is scheduled
Because applying early doesn’t improve your lottery odds, there’s no need to panic if you didn’t apply immediately. But submitting sooner gives you more time to fix any application or documentation problems before the deadline.
Watch Out for CASH SJC Scams
Applying for CASH SJC is completely free.
The program says it will never ask you to pay to apply or to be selected, and representatives will never ask for your bank password or PIN.
If someone contacts you claiming you need to pay a fee to receive CASH SJC benefits, don’t send them money.
