Not every scholarship worth applying for is based on your family’s income, and the Coca-Cola Scholars Program is a great example. This one hands out $20,000 to graduating seniors purely based on leadership, service, and academics, which means it’s open to you no matter what your household earns.
Here’s what the program looks like this year and how you can put your name in the running.
What Is the Coca-Cola Scholars Program?
The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation gives out this award to 150 high school seniors across the country every year, and each recipient walks away with $20,000 toward college. Rather than looking at financial need, the foundation is searching for students who’ve already shown they can lead and serve their communities in a meaningful way.
Since it began back in 1986, the foundation has handed out tens of millions of dollars to thousands of students nationwide, so this program has a long track record behind it.
Who Can Apply?
This scholarship isn’t limited to students from any particular income bracket, but there are still some firm rules about who’s allowed to apply:
- You’re still in high school and set to earn your diploma this academic year
- You attend school in one of the 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, or a qualifying Department of Defense school
- You’re a US citizen, national, permanent resident, or fall under another federally recognized immigration status that qualifies for federal financial aid
- You’re planning to attend an accredited college in the US after graduation
- You can show at least a B average in your high school coursework
A few groups are specifically excluded, most notably relatives of people who currently work for, or are retired from, Coca-Cola bottling companies or the Coca-Cola Company itself. Students who’ve already graduated high school, along with international students outside the DoD school exception, aren’t eligible either.
Because this scholarship doesn’t factor in your family’s finances at all, it’s worth applying even if you assume you make too much to qualify for other aid. Academics and leadership are what carry weight here, not your tax return.
How the Selection Process Works
Getting picked as a Coca-Cola Scholar happens in stages, and it starts easier than you might expect.
The first round is a straightforward online application with no essay, no transcript, and no letters of recommendation required. Out of everyone who applies, roughly 1% move on to become semifinalists, and that’s when the workload picks up: semifinalists have to submit essays, a transcript, and a recommendation letter. From there, a smaller group advances to the finalist round and sits down for an interview with alumni and staff from the foundation.
The students who make it through that final step are flown to Atlanta to be formally welcomed as new Coca-Cola Scholars.

Because the first-round application is so light on requirements, there’s really no reason not to apply if you meet the basic criteria. Worst case, you don’t advance. Best case, you’re $20,000 closer to paying for school.

Applications go through the foundation’s online portal, and it’s the only way to submit; they don’t accept mailed, faxed, or emailed applications. Since the first phase asks for basic information rather than essays, it’s a quick one to knock out, so get it done early rather than waiting until the deadline crunch in late September.
