If you’re an Oregon veteran facing a financial emergency, the state has a grant built specifically for you. It’s called the Oregon Veterans’ Emergency Financial Assistance Program, or OVEFAP, and it’s meant to catch you when something urgent threatens your housing, health, or basic stability.
What Can This Grant Help With?
OVEFAP covers a wide range of emergencies, including:
- Emergency or temporary housing costs, including utilities, insurance, and house repairs
- Mortgage or rent assistance
- Emergency medical or dental expenses
- Emergency transportation expenses
One important detail: the money never comes to you directly. Oregon sends a check straight to your creditor, whether that’s a landlord, utility company, or medical provider.
Who Can Apply?
You can apply if you’re a veteran discharged under honorable conditions, or if you’re the unremarried surviving spouse, dependent child, or stepchild of one. You’ll also need to be an Oregon resident and show that you’re facing a genuine, immediate financial need.
How Much Can I Get?
This grant is a one-time benefit. You can only receive it once in your lifetime, so it’s meant for a real emergency, not routine expenses.
The state of Oregon does not list a minimum or maximum grant amount. They simply say that the amounts vary.
How Do I Apply?
You’ll need to download and complete the OVEFAP application, then write a cover letter explaining how the assistance will help you and whether you’ve already reached out to other support programs.
Send your completed application in accordance with the instructions on the official program page.
What If This Isn’t the Right Fit?
If your emergency doesn’t quite match what OVEFAP covers, or you’ve already used your one-time benefit, other options exist. Military and service organizations like the American Legion, Army Emergency Relief, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, and VFW all run their own emergency relief funds. Your local Veteran Service Officer can help point you toward the one that fits your situation.
