The Center for Southern Folklore is one of our favorite free things to do in Memphis. You can learn about folklore and how it is prominent in the South. While you’re there, you can pick up valuable information about stories that run freely through the area. You might even pick up a bit of history while there!

The University of Memphis Art Museum offers free admission. You can enjoy different art pieces and installments. The museum features permanent exhibits you can enjoy. They may also have minimal temporary pieces that you can check out.

The Jimmy Ogle History Walking Tour is a free outdoor experience. You can take the tour for free, but it’s important to understand that downtown parking may require you to pay. The Dixon Gallery and Gardens offers free admission each day of the week except Tuesdays. If you visit any day other than Tuesday, you can get in for free. If you have to plan your visit for a Tuesday, it’s still only “pay what you can” for admission.

These aren’t museums, but they’re still free things to do in Memphis.

The Riverwalk is a great experience during the late spring and summer months. During the fall and winter, there may be inclement weather that prevents you from being able to get the most out of the tour.

The Meditation Garden at Graceland is free for anyone to visit. While you will pay for admission to take a tour of Graceland, you can enjoy the meditation garden without any charges.

The Crystal Shrine Grotto is a must-see in memphis. It’s a quick stop when you’re visiting Memorial Park and you’ll be delighted with the religious sculptures and vast amounts of quartz. This family-friendly grotto is in the middle of a cemetary.

Even though you don’t have to pay anything to get into the A. Schwab General Store, you might want to bring a little bit of money along because you’ll surely want to buy something! You can even get penny candy just like in the “old days.”

Free dance lessons at the Rumba Room are a great way to relax and unwind after spending a day in the city. Classes, especially free ones, book quickly so make sure you have reservations in advance.

The Bass Pro Pyramid has aquariums, boats and anything outdoor enthusiasts would want to see. Even if you don’t hunt or fish, you might want to check out all the awesome things at the Bass Pro Pyramid!

It’s Thursday! Here are free things to do in Memphis.

The Levitt Shell free shows are great for families! You can visit the Levitt Shell on Thursday evenings and check out any of the free shows they have going on. Shows happen every Thursday in the summer and late spring. They may extend into fall, but may be subject to cancellation for inclement weather.

Are you a Tennessee Resident? You can get into these places for free!

The Memphis Zoo is free for residents of Tennessee each Tuesday evening. There are rules that you will have to follow when visiting. You’ll also have to show your ID to get in!

The National Civil Rights Museum is free on Monday evenings for all Tennessee residents. You will be required to show your state-issued ID. Military members who are stationed in Tennessee will be considered residents. College students can show a Tennessee college ID to be considered residents for free admission purposes.
