Good News Garage provides free donated cars to low income people in New England. They’ve awarded over 6,000 cars since 1996! Let’s talk about how you can apply for one.
What is Good News Garage?
Good News Garage was one of the first-ever nonprofit car donation programs in the United States. They were founded in 1996 with a plan to repair donated cars and give them away to people who need help with transportation. The goal is to help people become more self-sufficient.
What Services Do They Offer?
Good News Garage has two programs that help people with transportation needs.
- Donated Wheels gives away refurbished cars to New England people who need reliable transportation.
- Ready To Go provides thousands of free rides every year for people who need help getting to work, child care, medical appointments and more.
The services vary depending on what area you’re in.
Am I Eligible?
The requirements for eligibility depend on which program you’re interested in and where you live.
- Massachusetts residents may be eligible for a free car from Donated Wheels, but they must be referred by MassAbility in order to apply.
- New Hampshire services have been paused at this time (2026) due to lack of funding. It will hopefully come back soon.
- Vermont residents may be eligible for free rides or even free cars, but these programs are administered by Vermont’s Department for Children and Families. For assistance, contact your Reach Up program case manager (or apply for Reach Up if you qualify).
How to Apply
Unfortunately, you cannot apply directly with Good News Garage. You have to apply through a partner agency like MassAbility or Vermont’s Reach Up Program.
