If you’re an Idaho veteran facing a genuine emergency, like an accident, disability, or catastrophic event that’s left you without the basics, the state runs a grant built specifically for that moment. What Can This Grant Cover?

There are hard limits either way:
- No single grant can exceed $1,500
- You can only receive one grant every six months
- Across your entire lifetime, the total of all grants you and your dependents receive cannot exceed $1,500

Who Qualifies?
You’ll need to meet all three of these baseline requirements:
- Idaho residency. Your primary home is in Idaho, and you intend to stay.

- Idaho as your home of record. Idaho needs to have been your home of record when you entered service. If it wasn’t, this requirement can be waived if you’ve lived in Idaho for at least five years.

- Destitute veterans are those facing extreme emergency need from an accident or catastrophic event that happened within the last 90 days
- Disabled veterans are those who are unemployed due to a disabling condition that occurred within the last 90 days
- Surviving spouses and dependent children of veterans who meet the above requirements
The 90-day window can be waived by the Division in some cases, so it’s worth applying even if you’re not sure you fit the timeline exactly.
What Disqualifies You?
A few things rule this grant out for you, including:
- Living in a long-term care facility or domiciliary
- Refusing to apply for other government benefits you may be eligible for
- Trying to use this grant to duplicate help you’re already getting from another source
You’ll also need to certify that you’ve applied for other available assistance programs first. This grant is meant to fill gaps, not replace other benefits.
What Should You Expect During the Process?
Applicants have to agree to let the state look into their financial, domestic, and employment situation as it relates to the emergency. That information stays confidential, but it is part of how your request gets evaluated.
If you’re approved, payment doesn’t go directly to a vendor the way it does with some other programs. Instead, the State Controller’s Office issues a payment on your behalf.
