What Kind of Help Can You Get?
Joining Forces Idaho can help cover urgent costs like:
- Overdue electric or utility bills
- Rent
- Car repairs
- Other essential, one-time expenses
Money isn’t handed to you directly. If your request is approved, payment goes straight to the provider, whether that’s your landlord, utility company, or mechanic.
Beyond direct payment, you may also get connected to other kinds of support, like financial advising, educational resources, or a benefits advocate who can help you build longer-term stability.
Who Can Apply?
You’ll need to be:
- A resident of Idaho
- A veteran, or closely related to one (like a spouse or dependent)
This program is built for one-time emergencies, not ongoing expenses. Your request needs to be for something that won’t repeat next month, and you’ll need to show you’re actively working to improve your situation.
What Do You Need to Show?
Be ready to document:
- Your current income or employment status
- Any benefits you receive
- Any other income or support you’re getting
- What you’re doing to improve your situation
If you’re asking for help with a specific bill, like rent or utilities, you’ll need to provide the actual statement or invoice. Landlords will be contacted directly to confirm rent amounts.
You’ll also need:
- Your DD214 or separation papers showing your discharge status
- Proof of Idaho residency, or proof that you intend to make Idaho your home
Approval isn’t automatic. The team reviewing your request looks at things like whether you’re already receiving or actively pursuing VA benefits, your dependents, and the overall circumstances behind your request. Since funding comes from a mix of sources, being thorough on your application helps connect you with the right one.

Is This the Same as Idaho’s Other Veteran Emergency Grant?
Not quite. Idaho also runs a separate program, sometimes called Idaho Veterans Financial Assistance, that offers up to $1,500 for extreme emergencies. That program has its own rules, including a requirement that you entered the military from Idaho or lived in the state for at least five years, and that you apply within 90 days of the emergency. If Joining Forces doesn’t fit your situation, ask your local Veteran Service Officer about this option too.
