A lot of food programs help with groceries, but they still expect you to cook. That can be hard when you are sick, disabled, grieving, overwhelmed, recovering from surgery, caring for someone else, living without reliable transportation, or just stretched too thin.
That’s why Lasagna Love is such a helpful resource. It is a nonprofit that connects people who need a meal with local volunteers who cook and deliver a homemade lasagna or main dish for free. Lasagna Love says people can request help for themselves or nominate someone else, and the program currently has volunteers cooking in the United States, Canada, and Australia.
Quick help: You can request a meal directly through the Lasagna Love website. You do not have to prove your income, but you do need to wait for a local volunteer to be available.
What Lasagna Love Does
This program is basically neighbor-to-neighbor meal help. A volunteer in your area signs up to cook, gets matched with someone who requested a meal, and arranges delivery. Lasagna Love says the ingredients are personally purchased and donated by the volunteer who makes the meal.
Strictly speaking, this program only promises that you will receive one home-cooked lasagna regardless of your household size. However, sometimes volunteers choose to provide side dishes, desserts or other goodies as well. What you receive may vary depending on which volunteer prepares your meal.

However, it’s not always instant. You shouldn’t count on this in an emergency situation. Lasagna Love says that in most areas, people can expect to hear back within about four weeks, but it can take longer when requests are high or volunteers are limited. They also ask people not to submit multiple requests because duplicate requests may be deleted during data cleanup.
Who Lasagna Love Can Help
Lasagna Love’s own wording says “kindness is for everyone,” and they invite people to request help “no matter the reason for the need.” That means you don’t have to fit a narrow category like senior, parent, veteran, or disabled person in order to ask.
Lasagna Love may be a good fit if you need one home-cooked meal because life is heavy right now.
- Financial hardship: If groceries are tight, a free prepared meal can give your budget a little breathing room.
- Illness, disability, or recovery: If standing in the kitchen is difficult, this can help you get through a hard week.
- Grief, burnout, or overwhelm: You do not have to be in a formal crisis to ask. Sometimes dinner is just the thing you cannot manage.
- Transportation problems: This can be especially helpful for people who cannot get to a food pantry. Several Low Income Relief readers have asked for food options that deliver because local pantries may not be reachable without a car.
- Caregiving stress: If you are caring for children, a spouse, a parent, or another loved one, one delivered meal can still make a difference.
How to Request Your Lasagna
You will need to request the meal online through Lasagna Love.
- Check your area. Lasagna Love has a ZIP code checker so you can see if the program is available near you. Availability depends on whether there are volunteers nearby.
- Choose who the meal is for. You can request a meal for yourself or nominate someone else. If you nominate another person, Lasagna Love says that person will receive an email inviting them to accept the nomination and sign up.
- Fill out the form carefully. Include your contact information and any important dietary restrictions. Lasagna Love asks people not to make special requests unless there is a dietary restriction, because volunteers are paying for the ingredients themselves.
- Wait for a match. Once you are matched, the volunteer usually coordinates the delivery with you. Lasagna Love describes the process as a match between the requester and a volunteer who makes the dish at home and arranges contactless delivery.
Please remember it may take a while because this is an all-volunteer program.
A Few Things to Know
The wait can be real. This is not emergency food assistance. If you have no food today, contact 211, local food banks, churches, community fridges, or emergency assistance programs too.
Your area may not have enough volunteers. One viewer said they had applied several times over the years before finally receiving a meal. That does not mean everyone will wait that long, but it does show why availability can vary so much.

Food safety matters. These meals are usually made in a volunteer’s home kitchen. If you have severe allergies, food restrictions, or immune system concerns, make sure you explain that clearly on the request form.
Don’t submit multiple requests. Lasagna Love specifically says not to submit duplicates, because multiple requests may be deleted.
You may be able to receive help more than once. Some viewers have received Lasagna Love more than once, but you should always follow the current request rules on the Lasagna Love website. Because this program depends on volunteers, it’s important to be considerate. If you need ongoing help, use Lasagna Love as one piece of your plan—not the whole plan.
This is not a replacement for SNAP or food banks. It is a beautiful one-meal support program, but it is not designed to provide ongoing groceries. If you need regular food help, you may also want to apply for SNAP, check local food banks, look into senior food boxes, or call 211.
Can You Volunteer?
Yes. If you are in a position to help, Lasagna Love needs volunteers who can cook and deliver meals in their own communities. Their website says volunteers can use their cooking skills to donate homemade meals, and people can also sponsor a volunteer if they want to help but cannot cook.
This matters because long waitlists usually mean there are more people asking for meals than there are volunteers available to make them.
Important SNAP note: If you receive SNAP, be careful not to use your EBT card to buy ingredients for a Lasagna Love delivery. Federal SNAP rules say benefits can only be used to buy eligible food for your own household, or by someone your household chooses to shop for food for your household. That means SNAP should not be used to buy food you plan to donate to someone else.
