If you’re a professional dancer who’s lost work because of an injury, illness, or canceled performance, keeping up with everyday bills can quickly become overwhelming.
The Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants program may be able to help. Eligible dancers can receive up to $3,000 toward essential expenses like rent, groceries, utilities, medical bills, and transportation.
Applications are currently closed, but two upcoming application cycles have already been announced. The next one opens November 10, 2026.
Here’s how the program works, who qualifies, and what you’ll need to apply.
What Are the Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants?
The Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants program helps professional dancers facing financial emergencies caused by circumstances beyond their control.
Funded by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and administered by the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), the program provides financial assistance to dancers who have lost performance work because of unexpected situations, including injuries, illnesses, or canceled engagements.
Eligible applicants may receive up to $3,000 to cover essential expenses over three consecutive months.
The grant is intended to help dancers manage immediate financial hardship, not replace their income indefinitely.
You can find the full program details on NYFA’s official grant page.
What Expenses Can the Grant Cover?
The grant can help pay for several everyday necessities.
Eligible expenses include:
- Housing: Rent and security deposits for a new rental.
- Utilities: Electricity, gas, heating fuel, internet, and cellphone bills.
- Food: Groceries and prepared food for the applicant, excluding dine-in restaurant meals.
- Healthcare: Medical, dental, and mental health expenses, including insurance premiums.
- Transportation: Car payments, auto insurance, gasoline, public transportation, and rideshare services.
You may request eligible expenses dating from six months before the application deadline through six months afterward, subject to the program’s rules.
However, not every expense qualifies.
The grant does not cover mortgage payments, expenses for family members, credit card debt, student loans, cable television, or purchases of vehicles and equipment.
Because funding is limited, you should carefully review the expense guidelines before deciding how much to request.
Who Qualifies for the Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grant?
This program is specifically designed for professional dancers. You must meet the personal, professional, and financial emergency requirements.
Personal and Income Requirements
To qualify, you must:
- Be at least 21 years old by the application deadline.
- Live in the United States, Washington, D.C., a Tribal Nation, or a U.S. territory.
- Have an average adjusted gross income of $80,000 or less if filing individually, or $160,000 or less if filing jointly, based on your two most recent tax returns.
- Not be enrolled in a degree-seeking program.
- Not have received a Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grant or Rauschenberg Medical Emergency Grant within the previous five years.
You do not need to be a full-time dancer to qualify.
Professional Dance Experience
Applicants must have at least five years of paid, live dance performance experience, including at least one paid live performance engagement every year since 2022.
Eligible dance forms may include ballet, modern, contemporary, hip-hop, tap, traditional and cultural dance, and certain circus performances.
However, some performance work does not count toward the experience requirement.
For example, NYFA excludes performances in educational or academic settings, social dancing, competitions, clubs, exotic dance, commercials, and industrial productions.
Film and television performances alone are not enough. Applicants must also have qualifying live performance experience.
Choreographers may qualify if they also meet the requirements as performing dancers. If you’ve performed in work you choreographed, your resume should clearly identify both roles.
Self-produced online performances do not count toward the required live performance experience.
Financial Emergency Requirements
You must be experiencing a serious financial emergency connected to losing dance work for reasons outside your control.
Examples may include:
- A performance or engagement being canceled unexpectedly.
- An injury that prevents you from performing.
- An illness that interrupts your ability to work.
Generally, the emergency must have occurred within approximately six months of the application deadline.
You’ll need to explain what happened, how it affected your dance income, and why you need financial assistance.
Losing income alone does not automatically guarantee eligibility or funding. NYFA evaluates the circumstances and financial severity of each application.
When Can You Apply?
NYFA accepts applications through recurring cycles throughout the year.
The October 2026 application window has already closed, but the foundation has announced two upcoming opportunities.
Cycle 27: November–December 2026
- Applications open: Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. ET
- Application deadline: Tuesday, December 8, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET
- Applicants notified: January 22, 2027
Cycle 28: January–February 2027
- Applications open: Tuesday, January 12, 2027, at 10:00 a.m. ET
- Application deadline: Tuesday, February 2, 2027, at 5:00 p.m. ET
- Applicants notified: March 19, 2027
These dates give you time to prepare your documents before applications open.
NYFA also states that applying earlier within an application window does not improve your chances of receiving a grant.
Always confirm the current schedule on the official Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants page before submitting your application.
How to Apply for the Grant
Applications are submitted through NYFA’s online application system during an open application cycle.
Before starting, gather the information you’ll need to document your professional experience, income, and financial emergency.
Step 1: Prepare Your Dance Resume
You’ll need a resume or CV showing at least five years of qualifying paid dance performance experience.
Make sure your resume clearly identifies your live performances and includes the required recent work history.
You may also provide your artist website if you have one.
Step 2: Gather Your Income Information
You’ll need information from your two most recent tax returns so NYFA can evaluate your income eligibility.
Step 3: Explain Your Financial Emergency
The application requires several short written responses, including:
- A 100-word summary of your professional dance activity.
- A 200-word description of your financial emergency.
- A 150-word explanation of a step you would take toward greater financial stability.
You’ll also complete an economic severity checklist to help NYFA understand your financial circumstances.
Be specific about how your emergency affected your ability to earn income through dance.
Step 4: List the Expenses You Need Help Paying
You’ll need to identify the eligible expenses you’re requesting assistance with.
These might include rent, utility bills, medical expenses, groceries, or transportation costs.
Review the official guidelines carefully to make sure the expenses qualify.
Step 5: Submit Your Application
Once the application window opens, visit NYFA’s official grant page and follow the instructions to access the application portal.
If you cannot apply online because of a disability or lack of internet access, NYFA offers alternative application accommodations, including paper applications and assistance.
How Are Grant Recipients Selected?
The Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants program is competitive.
NYFA evaluates applications based on the applicant’s circumstances and financial need.
According to its selection process, the highest-scoring application receives funding automatically, while another group of qualifying applicants enters a lottery for the remaining available awards.
This means meeting every eligibility requirement does not guarantee you’ll receive money.
The program receives more requests for assistance than it can fund.
How Long Does It Take to Receive the Money?
This is important if you’re facing an immediate deadline for rent or another bill.
NYFA typically notifies applicants several weeks after the application window closes.
If you’re selected, payment can take up to 30 business days after the required paperwork is completed.
Because of that timeline, this grant may not be the best option if you need money within the next few days.
If you’re facing an immediate housing or utility emergency, consider looking for local assistance while waiting for the grant process.
What If You’re an Artist but Not a Dancer?
NYFA also administers the separate Rauschenberg Medical Emergency Grants program, which helps eligible artists facing qualifying medical emergencies.
That program has different eligibility requirements, so it’s worth reviewing separately if your circumstances involve unexpected healthcare expenses.
You can also explore other financial assistance opportunities through our list of hardship grants for low-income Americans.
Relief Recap
The Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants program offers eligible professional dancers up to $3,000 toward essential expenses after an unexpected loss of dance work.
The funding may help cover rent, utilities, groceries, healthcare, and transportation, but applicants must meet specific professional experience, income, and emergency requirements.
The next application cycle opens November 10, 2026, and closes December 8, 2026. Another cycle runs from January 12 through February 2, 2027.
Funding is limited, and awards aren’t guaranteed. Still, if you’re a professional dancer dealing with an unexpected financial emergency, this program may be worth considering.
