SNAP May Allow Hot Rotisserie Chicken Purchases

It looks like the SNAP program might finally be getting that common-sense upgrade we’ve all been waiting for.

There is a new bill in Congress that could change what millions of people can buy with those EBT cards. We know that about 42 million households are currently relying on EBT, and most people simply don’t have the ability to cook from scratch every single night.

So there has been a huge bipartisan push to make this a reality and allow people to buy hot rotisserie chickens with those SNAP EBT dollars.

This is a transcript of our video. You can watch the full video on our YouTube channel: Low Income Relief.

What The Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act Does

The Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act is very simple and straightforward. It is a whopping four lines long. It’s not one of those big, behemoth bills that goes on forever and does a bunch of things. It’s very narrow, very targeted, and aimed at changing one specific part of one specific rule.

Right now, SNAP cannot be used for hot prepared foods, including a fresh rotisserie chicken at the deli counter. The proposed change simply inserts hot rotisserie chicken into the existing food stamps law as something you can purchase at participating retailers nationwide.

    Why This Change Matters

This is a huge deal that a lot of us have been waiting for because it’s never really made a lot of sense the way they handle this.

SNAP already covers cold rotisserie chicken. So Costco and Walmart can cook a rotisserie chicken, and you can’t buy it while it’s hot—but if they put it in the refrigerator long enough, then it’s suddenly fine. That doesn’t make a lot of sense.

I really liked what Harrison Kircher, president of the National Chicken Council, said:
“There is no nutritional difference. There’s no logical difference. There is only an outdated technicality that forces grocery stores to heat chickens and then cool them back down just to comply, wasting energy, degrading quality, and adding cost.”

Honestly, why? It doesn’t make a lot of sense.

    Current Efforts And State Waivers

Several states have already independently requested waivers from the USDA to make it possible for you to buy these hot rotisserie chickens. But this bill, if enacted at the federal level, would make it the law of the land, and those states wouldn’t need to pursue waivers anymore.

This option would become available for everyone who relies on SNAP, which would be such an amazing blessing.

Why This Is So Important For Families

Time poverty is real. Many people on SNAP are working multiple jobs or have inconsistent schedules. Having a ready-to-eat meal isn’t just a luxury—it’s a matter of survival.

Affordable protein is really hard to find. A whole rotisserie chicken can feed a family for $5 or $6, and that is definitely one of the best value meals available.

In fact, all of the articles I read while researching this said that, hands down, the best food deal you can get right now is those Costco rotisserie chickens. So it just makes sense to allow people who are shopping with SNAP to buy that affordable food.

It’s healthy. It’s good for you. It’s cheap. It’s affordable. It just makes sense.

What You Can Do To Help

Just to be clear, this is a bill in Congress. It’s not in effect yet, so please don’t assume that this is already law. We are working to get this passed.

If you want to help make this happen, your voice really can make a difference. This is a bipartisan, common-sense bill. It costs nothing extra. It’s not complicated. It’s going to help millions of people.

You can go to house.gov or senate.gov to look up your representatives by your ZIP code. Call them, email them, reach out however you want, and then share this video so that more people will speak up in support of the Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act as well.
