Your Doctor Could Prescribe Free Groceries?!

What if your doctor could prescribe you healthy food, and either Medicare or Medicaid would pay for it?

A new bill in Congress could make this a reality, and it could change everything for families that are struggling to afford healthy food. I want to talk to you about this because this is so important.

This is a transcript of our video. You can watch the full video on our YouTube channel: Low Income Relief.

I hear so much flack on the internet from people who are upset about how low-income people eat, but then when you try to go buy fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, say at your local farmers market, everything is priced so far out of reach that it just doesn’t make sense. The math doesn’t add up.

So, we know that when healthy food is out of reach, health gets worse. Doctor visits cost more. Stress goes up.

And so, this bill is called the Food Is Medicine Act of 2026, and I love that because, honestly, it just makes a lot of sense.

    How The Program Would Work

This bill was introduced just last week in the House, and there are actually two parts to this bill.

The first one is the National Food as Medicine Program Act of 2026, which would establish this nationwide framework for these prescription food programs. I’m going to talk to you a little bit about what this is before I tell you about that second part that could change your healthcare benefits.

So food is medicine is basically a reference to a movement that wants to use healthy food as part of your medical care. Programs like Fresh RX are already doing this locally, and I know I’ve talked about this on the channel before.

They call it a produce prescription program. So you go talk to your doctor, and your doctor maybe diagnoses you with something like diabetes or high blood pressure, something that’s known to have a food-related component, right? Diabetes, you’ve got to watch your sugar. High blood pressure, usually they want you to watch your salt, things like that.

And then in areas where they have this Food RX type program or produce prescription program, the doctor can be like, “You know what? Let me help you out.” And they give you a prescription for healthy fruits and vegetables or something like that.

Then it’s basically a voucher that you take to usually a local farm or a farmers market, and you’re able to get the food that you need without having to pay for it out of pocket, which makes it so much easier to manage those health conditions.

    Medicare And Medicaid Coverage

This bill is built on that same idea, but it’s scaled up nationally. So this could be a huge benefit to people with diet-related health conditions, especially those with low incomes who struggle to afford that nutritious food regularly.

And if that sounds like someone you know, feel free to drop a comment below and let me know what you think about this bill, because I personally think it is super exciting.

I love that there’s a companion bill here, too. The next bill is one that would require Medicaid and Medicare to cover food and nutrition services as part of a patient’s medical care.

So, bill number one establishes the program. Bill number two compels Medicare and Medicaid to help cover that, which would mean there would be no out-of-pocket costs for low-income patients and those who qualify for Medicare.

    How To Support These Bills

Like I said, both of these bills were introduced on April 20th. They are not law yet. There are a lot of hoops they have to jump through. They have to pass the House and the Senate.

Your voice can really help here. I know I’ve been talking about this a lot lately, but there are so many exciting things going on in Congress right now that really need support. The more we can speak up and help support those things, the better chance we have of seeing this stuff move forward.

So if you want to see food as medicine become national, please contact your representatives in the House and let them know that you support these bills. They’re H.R. 8390 and H.R. 8391.

It was also the National Food Is Medicine Act of 2026, and then of course the Medicare and Medicaid component as well.

If you don’t know who your representatives are, you can find them at congress.gov. You can either write them a message through the website or call them. You can also share this video to tell your friends and family about the bill.

And then, of course, if you have already used a produce prescription program, I would love to hear about your experiences with that. We’ve done all sorts of research trying to find those. So go check that out, go talk to your lawmakers, and check back soon for more ways to save money and get free stuff.
