Social Security Website Glitch Causes Panic for SSI Recipients

Over the past few weeks, thousands of people logged into their Social Security accounts and saw terrifying messages. Many SSI recipients were told their benefits had stopped or disappeared. Others found their entire payment history wiped clean. Some were even told they wouldn’t be paid in April.

These alarming errors weren’t the result of fraud or disqualifications. A widespread glitch in the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) online system caused them.

    Widespread Panic for SSI

CBS News reported that users across the country saw the message: “Currently not receiving payments.” That message triggered fear and confusion. One mother stayed up all night refreshing the page, afraid her son’s disability payments had been terminated. Others flooded SSA phone lines and field offices looking for answers, only to face long waits and limited help.

Despite the scale of the issue, SSA didn’t issue an official explanation. There were no alerts, no emails, and no reassurance that benefits were safe.

In addition to the misleading messages, many users found themselves locked out of their online accounts entirely. The website frequently crashed, displaying errors like “Bad Request” or “Unexpected System Error.” Some outages lasted for hours or even an entire day.

Even when the site came back online, tools were broken, information was missing, and users could not access essential services. These failures have left many feeling helpless and exhausted.

SSA Field Offices Are Also Affected

For those who tried to resolve the issue in person, the results were often just as frustrating. Social Security field offices rely on the same internal systems as the public website. When those systems crash, local offices are unable to help.

People who arrived without appointments were turned away, and those who had appointments were often rescheduled. SSA employees were forced to rely on pen and paper, adding to the delays and confusion.

    An Aging System Under Strain

The SSA still relies heavily on outdated technology, including COBOL—a programming language developed in 1959. This aging infrastructure is struggling to meet the demands of modern users. At the same time, the agency faces budget constraints, rising workloads, and new security tools that have not been fully tested.

These problems combine to create a fragile system, one that leaves millions of vulnerable Americans uncertain about the status of their benefits.

    How to Protect Yourself

If you see a message saying your benefits have stopped, don’t panic immediately. First, check if your payment history and other account details are also missing. If so, it may be part of the glitch.

If your benefits are deposited as usual, the message is likely an error. However, if money is missing or your account appears compromised, take action quickly.

    • Don’t visit your local office without an appointment. Most field offices no longer accept walk-ins.
    • Don’t call the national 800 number unless absolutely necessary. Instead, contact your local office using the information at ssa.gov/locator.
    • Try calling early in the morning or late in the day to avoid long hold times.

If your account is locked or displaying incorrect data, SSA staff may not be able to fix it until the internal systems are restored. They may not even be able to access your records.

Keep checking your bank account for deposits, and monitor your mail for official notices. If the SSA stops your benefits for any real reason, they are required to notify you in writing.

    Relief Recap

The glitch caused panic, but many of the alarming messages were not real terminations. By explaining what’s happening, how to tell if you’re affected, and what steps to take, this information can prevent unnecessary stress, save time, and provide guidance when official support channels fall short.

Social Security is essential to millions. When the system fails, people need clear and compassionate information. That’s what this article aims to provide.

      1. Four weeks ago I was unable to log in to my SS account for my SSI. When I called my local office I was informed that I was locked out and a NEW pin number would be sent to me in the physical mail in order to log in.
I still cannot log in and have been doing my best to follow the protocal that we were instructed to do on the low income YouTube Channel.
Please let me know what to do I want to comply.
        Thank you

      2. Thank you for all your support and hard work getting us and our kids some where to go with no money.my GOD BLESS YOU

To claim that any bad request error messages people are receiving trying to sign in have anything to do with parts of the system written in cobalt is a lie. The backend that may be responsible for generating the checks is written in COBOL, but websites are NOT written in COBOL, especially the sign in processes that take you to login.gov or ID.me. There is no COBOL involved in any of that. If the lying Trump administration or Musk tries to tell you that the website is down because it’s written in COBOL, they are lying to you.
