An unexpected expense can make staying in college a lot harder. A medical bill, sudden housing problem or another financial emergency can quickly throw off a student’s plans.
If you’re enrolled at George Mason University and something like this happens during Fall 2026, the Stay Mason Student Support Fund may be able to help.
This isn’t a loan. It’s a one-time emergency assistance grant designed for Mason students experiencing unexpected financial challenges that could put their continued enrollment at risk.
Applications for Fall 2026 are open through December 7, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET, subject to funding availability.
What Is the Stay Mason Student Support Fund?
The Stay Mason Student Support Fund provides emergency financial assistance to degree-seeking George Mason University students facing unexpected financial hardship.
This isn’t intended to provide long-term financial assistance or full tuition relief. Mason describes the funding as a last-resort resource for students experiencing an emergency or sudden financial crisis.
Priority consideration is given to students whose continued enrollment at Mason may be at risk because of unexpected and unforeseen events or expenses.
Funding isn’t guaranteed, and the number of students who can receive assistance and the amounts awarded depend on available funds.
Who Qualifies for Stay Mason?

For graduate students, you must have:

What About Financial Aid?
Stay Mason is intended to be a last-resort source of emergency assistance.
If you’re eligible for federal financial aid, you must have a current 2026–27 FAFSA on file and must have accepted and received all offered subsidized and unsubsidized federal loans before your emergency assistance application can be considered.
However, students who aren’t eligible for federal financial aid may still apply.
What Expenses Could Stay Mason Help With?
Mason considers emergency expenses individually.
Examples of expenses that may qualify during Fall 2026 include:
- Emergency medical expenses not covered by insurance
- Required Fall 2026 books and course materials
- Technology or equipment needed to continue your education
- Homelessness or sudden loss of housing
- Current utility bills
- Loss of childcare
- Health insurance premiums
- Current-term tuition and fees in limited, case-by-case situations
- Replacement of stolen equipment essential to your coursework, when supported by a police report
- Other qualifying emergency financial needs considered individually
Mason’s FAQ also provides documentation requirements for requests involving rent or housing, phone and internet bills, food and groceries, car payments, car insurance and emergency car repairs.
For car repairs, the problem must be unexpected or an emergency. Routine maintenance and vehicle or tire replacement aren’t eligible for funding.
What Won’t Stay Mason Cover?
Not every financial need qualifies.
For Fall 2026, Mason says it won’t consider expenses such as:
- Expenses incurred before August 18, 2026, except required Fall 2026 books and course materials
- Expenses from previous academic terms
- Anticipated Spring 2027 expenses
- Reimbursement for tuition or fees that have already been paid
- Expenses belonging to family members, pets or other people
- Student loan payments
- Credit card payments
- Study abroad costs
- Legal fines or expenses
- Non-essential personal bills
- Parking fees or tickets
- Library fines
- Non-emergency travel expenses
- Expenses that already received emergency funding in a previous term
If you’re unsure whether your particular emergency qualifies, it’s worth reviewing the current Stay Mason requirements before submitting your application.
How Much Could I Get?
Mason does not set a maximum amount that students can request.
However, that doesn’t mean you’ll receive whatever amount you ask for.
The amount actually awarded is determined by the review committee based on program guidelines, funding limits, available funding and the documentation supporting your expenses.
Funding isn’t guaranteed.
How Often Can I Receive Stay Mason Assistance?
Only one application can be considered per term.
Students can receive assistance through the Stay Mason/Emergency Assistance Fund process a maximum of three times during their entire academic career at Mason, including undergraduate, graduate, law and certificate program enrollment.
If you’ve received assistance previously but haven’t reached the three-award maximum, you may still be eligible to apply for Fall 2026.
Previous awards can be considered by the committee when it reviews your new request.
What Documents Will I Need?
You’ll need current documentation supporting each expense you’re requesting assistance for.
The exact documents depend on your situation.
For example, Mason may require:
- A current lease or mortgage statement for housing assistance
- Current utility, phone or internet bills
- Medical bills showing the balance remaining after insurance
- Bills or estimates for technology or equipment
- Receipts or estimates for required course materials
- Documentation from a childcare provider
- Current vehicle bills or repair documentation for qualifying vehicle-related requests
Mason requires full copies of relevant bills, leases, statements, receipts or estimates. The documents generally need to identify information such as your name, the provider, the amount due and what the expense is for.
Documentation must be uploaded through the application rather than emailed separately.
How Do I Apply?
Applications are submitted online through George Mason University’s Guardian platform.
Start at the official Stay Mason Student Support Fund page and select APPLY.
The Guardian application is called the George Mason University Incident Reporting Form. Under “Report Type,” you should see Stay Mason Student Support Fund automatically populated.
You’ll need to:
- Complete the eligibility questions.
- Enter the amount you’re requesting.
- Identify the expense categories that apply to your situation.
- Explain your current financial hardship.
- Upload documentation for each expense you’re requesting.
- Sign, save and submit the application.
After submitting, you should receive a confirmation message with a case number. Keep that number for your records.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Decision?
Mason says the review committee will do its best to communicate a decision through your Mason email within 21 business days of submission.
You may be asked to provide additional information or documentation during the review process.
All application decisions are final. If your application is denied, you can’t submit another application or request reconsideration during the same term, although you may be able to apply during a future term if you experience another emergency and meet the eligibility requirements.
Would I Have to Pay the Grant Back?
Usually, no.
Mason says emergency assistance funds do not need to be repaid unless you withdraw from enrollment.
If you receive funding and then withdraw during Fall 2026, you must return the award. Mason may post a balance for the award amount to your student account when appropriate.
There’s another important consideration: the award may be subject to federal taxes depending on its funding source.
Students are responsible for properly reporting the assistance and paying any applicable taxes. Awards funded through the George Mason University Foundation may also require tax documentation before funds are disbursed.
How Will I Receive the Money?
The payment method depends on the source of your award.
Mason determines how the funds are distributed, and students can’t request a particular payment method.
Depending on the funding source and circumstances, assistance may be posted to your Mason student account or distributed through direct deposit or check.
If funds are posted to your student account, they’ll first be applied to any outstanding tuition and fee balance. Any remaining amount can then be refunded to you.
When Is the Fall 2026 Deadline?
The Fall 2026 application window is:
- Opens: August 18, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. ET
- Closes: December 7, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET
However, Mason specifically says this application period is subject to the availability of funds.
That means students dealing with an eligible emergency shouldn’t assume funding will necessarily remain available through the final date.
Is Stay Mason Available Right Now?
Yes.
The Fall 2026 Stay Mason Student Support Fund application is currently open.
Students who meet the requirements and are dealing with an unexpected financial emergency can submit an application through Guardian.
Remember that assistance isn’t guaranteed. Awards depend on eligibility, the circumstances and documentation supporting your request, program guidelines and available funding.
