If you’re a Pennsylvania veteran going through a rough financial patch, the state has a grant that most people never hear about until they need it. It’s called Veterans Temporary Assistance, or VTA, and it’s meant for exactly this kind of moment.
Since the program started, Pennsylvania has awarded more than $8.6 million to over 9,650 veterans and families. Here’s how to see if you qualify.
What Can This Grant Cover?
VTA is built around the basics: food, shelter, fuel, and clothing. In practice, that means it can help with things like:
- Rent or mortgage payments
- Utility bills
- Groceries
- Other essential living costs when your income has hit a wall
You can receive up to $1,600 in a 12-month period. It’s not a loan and you don’t pay it back.
Who Qualifies?
You may be eligible if you:
- Served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable; OR
- Suffered a service-connected disability, regardless of how long you served; OR
- Are the surviving dependent of an eligible veteran, or of a service member who died in the line of duty or was killed in action
Beyond your service record, you’ll also need to show:
- You’re a permanent Pennsylvania resident
- You’re facing a genuine, temporary financial hardship, not just an inconvenience
- The hardship came from something beyond your control, like illness, disability, job loss, unexpected expense or a disaster
- You’re not already receiving enough help from another state or federal program to cover the same need
Already receiving food stamps? That’s fine. You can still qualify for VTA on top of that.
What Will You Need to Apply?
Applications ask for documentation to back up your situation, including:
- Your DD Form 214 or discharge paperwork
- Proof of Pennsylvania residency
- Proof of income loss, if that applies to you (like a termination notice or final pay stub)
- Documentation of any other benefits you receive, such as unemployment, disability, or Social Security
- Proof of your household expenses, including rent, utilities, and other essentials
- Recent receipts showing what you owe on rent, mortgage, or utilities
If you’re a surviving spouse, you’ll also need a marriage license and the veteran’s death certificate.
How Do I Apply?
You don’t apply to the state directly. Instead, you’ll work with your County Director of Veterans Affairs, who can walk you through the paperwork and submit it on your behalf.
